My Idea - Food delivery van...

Ok guys, please don't laugh or anything :o

But..

Yesterday when the ice cream van came round I starting thinking about other ideas for street delivery etc.. and I came up with maybe a confectionary / cake / pastries etc idea..

Maybe it's been done before, but I don't have a cake van coming round at night..

OH thought a fish and chips van would be cool, but I wasn't so sure you could guarantee the product to be nice and fresh..

What do you lot think?

I think its a good idea, i live in a very rural village and have to drive to get to any shop, i think there must be elderly people who would appreciate a van calling round on a regular basis, perhaps you could take orders and deliver on another day?

    Thanks for the encouragement Jess...

I didn't think of an ordering service, that is a good idea.. :)

Just unsure of how popular it may be, especially with people watching their purses and waistlines..

I just think there might be a gap in the market and i'd really like to be self employed again..

Are you going to supply the food, or find someone who makes it and deliver for them?

If the latter, how will you split the finances?

If the former when you get into food prep side there are all sort of regs and stock/storage issues?

Don't want to sound negative, but have you really thought it through?

    Thanks Nomad..

I havn't properly thought it through yet, although I did consider the food hygeine regulations etc.. I only came up with the idea last night, so i'm more getting peoples views on whether it is something they would buy from before I start going in depth about the finacial side of things...

:) cheers though, all input welcome..

    Thanks Debby :)

I guess everything is expensive nowdays and i'm wondering if it's a good idea or not, especially as there isn't one about so far, then maybe there is a reason for that..

It would be nice to have a cake van coming round tho :)

Far from it, I think it's a great idea. When I was growing up, 60's we bought lots of stuff from vans that came round. The fruit and veg man came round in a van, as did the pop man and the baker and also the grocery van.

Some of my earliest memories are of buying things from vans, especially before I started school and my mother would buy us both a cake each day from the baker's van.

I am sure there would be room for a van these days. Especially in rural areas where most of the local shops have closed and it's a long way to the super market.

One thing to be aware of if you do start, be regular and reliable. People will soon get sick if you turn up sometimes and not others.

I would think about selling things that are heavy to carry home on the bus, fruit and veg etc and not "luxury stuff". Although you could also stock boxed cakes, bread etc for when people are running out and don't want to travel just for one or two items.

    Geordie Joe,

    Great reply, thanks :)

I never really thought about being a mini supermarket on wheels as such, that is something I could consider for sure.. I suppose it all depends on profits of the items I would be selling aswell.

& good point about being regular and reliable.. :)

good luck if you do it i think it may be worth asking around what people would like you to sell, but you dont want to upset any local shops so try and work along side not against them them to keep the community going
they may even sell some goods for you at weekends for a small % our local shops sells some pies and cakes etc forgot whos they are now
try and a void waste, or you end up with a big waist. lol
what areas would you cover we live in a village we have a bakers shop and farm shop i just wish we had a butchers,

I guess it would mainly be villages and places far from a local shop, I would have to research that one.

I suppose fresh meat, milk etc would be good, also fruits, fresh cakes, pastries etc..

To be honest, I'm not entirely 100% sure on the exact things I want to sell, I suppose this is going to be my first market research :)
