END OF 2YEAR FIXED - HSBC playing unfair?.Advice needed.

Fixed [4.99] ending this month , i rang HSBC about 2 weeks ago asking what they had to offer - the assured me that i could keep my 4.99 for another 2 yrs for a fee of £499. Which i thought was ok , so i told them that i would have a think and ring them back.
Rang them today and they told me that the £499 fee had gone up to £799 , and that the offer i had been given was only valid until the 14th of May [WHICH THEY DID NOT MENTION!!]

Is there any point in haggling with them for the price? have they stepped out of line?
Anybody else get the same treatment?

Do you think that i should take a £85000 mtg out at [4.99] for 2 yrs for a fee of £799 ????

Haggle all you want, rates and fees change all the time, such is life.

Whether you should or shouldn't take it is up to you. Certainly you won't get any comparable rates on today's market.

You had to think about taking a 4.99% fixed rate with a £499 fee in the current climate?!

Where do I sign would have been my response!

You can try and see if they will offer to you on the original basis, but if they do, you will be lucky. You could try and say you would like to hear the redorded conversation where you were told of the deal was valid until 14th May

Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose

Part of HSBC's call script is "rates are for illustrations purposes only" so the CSR would probably have said that.
Even if they didn't, HSBC won't be obliged to provide the lower fee.

I cant believe you wanted to thinkl about it in the first place - what was to think about when you were offered the best deal Ive seen this year!

    Paralysis thru analysis perhaps
  • Oh dear me,

Having just re-mortgageed myself with the same fee as you and a higher rate than you makes me think WHY oh WHY did you think about it. People who say to me they are shopping around to get a better deal when I know full well what I have recommneded is the best makes my teeth bleed. Come on Chelsea!!!!

Hunter-Gatherer please take HSBC's deal for your own sake!!!!

HSBC are not playing unfair and have done nothing wrong. You chose not to buy that mortgage when you had the chance and whilst you were thinking about it others realised what a good deal it was and sucked up all HSBCs allocation for that deal.

You are at fault for not buying the deal when you had the chance. This deal even with the extra charge is a cracking deal and you better speed up before all the funds for that are used up as well.

I think the comment about being greedy is out of order. We all trying to get the best deal we can find ,but unfortunately sometimes we don't realise how good the deal is before it's too late.
  • Thanks all for the feedback!! honestly !
Yep - i was being greedy and thats me !
They have a recording of the call which they have listened to - they offer the rate for 499 , but say nothing at all about the time limit on the offer ![this is what really gets me] because i was going to take the offer anyway - i was just waiting for a spare £500 to float by before the end of the month so that i could pay the fee [if i would have been aware of the urgency to strike the deal - i would have taken it there and then and would have been eating grass cuttings and cycling 20miles to work a day for a month :rotfl: ]
Anyways - judging from the reaction i think ill take the deal for 799 - i think ill still save opposed to going on variable.
    Thanks again!:D
