My other half is consolidating his finances and is taking a loan of £8500 with Barclays over 3 years.

They have told him he cant take it over 3 years and must take it over 4 years.

Can they do this?

I would imagine that they can do what they like, they are lending the money after all. If your OH insists on a 3 year term then Barclays could just turn round and decline to offer him the loan at all. They are probably looking at it from an affordibility point of view, can't your OH just save the extra he would have paid each month and use it to repay the loan early?
