What would you do?

I know i'm the only one who can make this decision but I was curious to find out what you would do.

My husband and I are 20k in debt. He earns an ok wage but i'm on a low low salary.

I have been in my job since September and I love it. I really enjoy it and the people are so so nice - i've never had that in a job before.

BUT....because of my low salary we are having to live a very VERY poor life and we won't be debt free for at least 3 years.

One option i have is to go up to the city in london and work up there. I will be on literally double the salary and we could be debt free in 18 months. But it will mean leaving a job i enjoy. I'm only a secretary so nothing hugely career focused.

So would you stick to the job your happy in and put up with struggling for a long period?

or would you leave the job your happy in, take a risk and go for the city money where you'll be debt free in half the time?

Any advice?

You are at work for a lot of time - enjoying it counts for a lot. If you can manage and it is just a case of taking a bit longer to clear debts (and not of going under) I personally would definitely stay with the happy job. You could take a chance on finding one you enjoy in the city but you say yourself you've never had that in a job before.

You could easily enjoy a city job just as much.!

If can enjoy a city job then the extra money will be a real bonus after you pay off your debt.

I wouldnt dream of leaving my current job even in the situation i am at present.....BUT.....double money and half the debt would soon change my mind.!!

I dont think I would risk a fairly happy existance for the unknown. 3 years is not a long time.
Cant you try cutting back a little more or taking a part time job? Have you tried using the snowball calculator? it can show just what a few extra pounds a week can do.

  • It really depends, if it was me then I'd probably make the move, just to get myself in the clear for a bit, and get a bit of savings behind me. Is the other job really far, i.e. would you have to move away from your husband? I ask thi as I had to move away to Berlin for a year to study, and it's been crap being apart from my bf and family, but I've survived, and if anything it's made bf and I stronger.

At the end of the day, however, we can only suggest options, and it's upto you. Sorry! xxx
