I started a thread here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=11040469#post11040469
Basically I am trying to find fruit in a jar for a hamper I am making for my FIL for fathers day. Does anyone have any ideas if it would be easily made as this could be the best option due to it not being very easy to find?
Any help or ideas would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Tams

Hi Rusty (nice to see your username still intact

Lidl do cherries in a jar in cherry juice for 99p and they are really nice - you could wash the label off and cover the lid.
I have preserved oranges in syrup before using a recipe from Tessa Kiro's book "falling cloudberries" - haven't got it to hand at the moment, but I think it involved boiling the whole unpeeled oranges in syrup for a while. I remember my mum doing it with orange peel when we were kids and using it in christmas cake. I found the syrup went cloudy and they didn't keep as long as I wanted them too, but they tasted okay - OH got really sick of orange spice cake though :rotfl: :rotfl: You do need to make sure you sterilise the jars first to kill of any nasties.

My local co-op sell Polish fruit in jars, I think there's cherries and strawberries. If you live in a fairly diverse area it might be worth looking in the 'international' sections. Also I live near a lot of Greek/Turkish/Cypriot shops and they tend to have it in too, again I think it's a Polish brand - don't know if that's any use to you? My mum has a small deli and she generally has this in, do you live near any small independent shops?
Or you could make something like a rumtopf - if alcohol's not a problem I've got a couple of recipes for things like cherries in port, apricots in amaretto and oranges in brandy, if you want any just say, they're easy to do and the quantities aren't huge.0 -

Thanksthe thread got deleted after about 20 pages!
I knew about the sterilising bottles and things like that but it all sounds rather complicated now!!! maybe I should just stick to buying some already in a jar? lol
Will keep looking and keep finding info. Thanks
