Opened up last night

Hello Everyone:hello:

Last week i had my lightbulb moment, after over a year of my £2500(ish) debt i decided its time to-do something with my life and get my backside well and truely into gear.:D I know it doesnt sound like a lot, but i earn very little and it feels like the world is on my shoulders :(

I had been keeping this debt to myself (and obv you guys) until lastnight:eek: My relationship with my fella was beginning to feel the strain. Over the last year we've had no real quality time together due to me being stressed 24/7 and not telling him why ( i though he would be angry with me for letting the debt spiral this out of control) I've been crying alot, and what with other problems with family etc i've been pushing the debt to the back of my head (which has made it worse).

Last night i told him, at 11:00pm of all times, and he was totally the opposite to how i thought he would have responded. We sat up lastnight (amongst the tears) until 01:00am. I have worked out i need to save £259 a month to pay off my debts by end of Dec 08. I have set myself little targets each week and each month which will give me something to acheive and look forward to completing.
Just wanted to thank everyone on here for being so inspiring, i respect you all for being so determined and never giving up despite the agony i know it can cause.
I've yet to post my S.O.A, and i promise i'll keep you all informed of my progress.

    Hiya

And now he knows that you love him and it was just the debt that was making you cry a lot and feel strained, not the relationship. I suspect that he is as relieved as you that it is out in the open.

maria08k, it's good that you've brought this out into the open.

Just a couple of points (hopefully helpful ones!)

You stated that you earn very little. £259 a month sounds like a large chunk out of anyone's wages, let alone a small wage.

Is there any reason that you've opted to pay it all off by December 2008?

The reason I mention this is that it can be quite soul destroying setting yourself near impossible targets & then regularly missing them. In my experience, I've learnt to cut myself a little slack with regards debt repayment, even if it takes a little longer.
Remember, you still have to live your life & continue to pay your regular outgoings as well as the unexpected bills alongside your debt repayment.

Might it not be a little more manageable if you gave yourself a little more time & fixed a monthly repayment amount that you can comfortably afford each & every month?

I'm honestly not trying to dampen your enthusiasm to get things paid off asap, but just leave yourself enought to live on or this enthusiasm could easily disappear.
Donedoingdebt Lightbulb moment January 2000. Debt at highest approx £102,000. Debt now (October 2009 - absolutely fork all!!!)

Hi Maria, Well done on "sharing" your problems - I did it myself and hid the 'truth' from hubby for quite a while and we've been married for 13 years!. I think we just want to save hurting the one's we love the most.

    Good luck to you both.

Thankyou all for your continued support, i earn £945 p.c.m, after all bills come out im left with about £200, i was thinking that maybe i could ask work for overtime, sell on EBay to boost up an extra £100/£150 a month so that i'am covered for all the "surprises" that might pop up. What do you think?
