occasional income?

Hi
Im a chef in full time employment and recently through a friend ive started getting requests to do outside catering events.
Its only an occasional thing(say one a month)but they pay well when they do come along.
My concern is how do i stay on the right side of the tax laws on this:confused: as its really not enough work to justify signing up as self employed but on the other hand its enough money for the tax man to want his share....can i just keep a record and declare it at the end of the year or.......

Thanks for all replies

Best thing to do in these circumstances is to call the tax man and tell him, let him advise you how to play it.

Hi Rich and welcome to Up Your Income on MSE.

I'm affraid I'm with Shawry on this one. It only takes one report to the taxman and you're done for tax evasion :-(. You couldn't prove that you were going to pay the tax due on your earnings whereas they could prove that you were working for cash in hand.

Apparently it's quite easy to register as self employed, although I've never done it myself but I've read enough of these threads to remember that bit.

    Good luck to you anyway.
