Haven't a clue about car keys, I always thought the key was for that one car only ie like a front door key.

    Doh!
Essentially they are, but the remote section of the key can work the central locking and immobilise the car to start. The cut part of the key is still very individual, like a front door key.

    Thanks, now I know.

  • 'Plip' keys bought off ebay will not be compatible with your vehicle (The remotes are pretty much unique to the vehicle, as well as the key). There are warnings on ebay to this effect.

(I'm sure there are are other posts on this forum relating to this, but it's still worth mentioning)

I have the same problem, and the only way I've found around the problem is to either: -
    1. Find out the 4-digit immobiliser bypass code - see here : -http://www.tv.quuq.org/forum/index.php?topic=696 This will allow you to carry on using the vehicle, though it is a pain in the neck having to bypass each time you start the car (Note - There are some unscrupulous individuals out there that will try to charge you £30 for this code, when all they will do is follow the same procedure listed here).
    2. Bite the bullet and buy a new 'plip' - Which, depending on dealership will cost you somewhere in the region of £120 to supply and programme it.
    3. Get your immobiliser bypassed completely - There are websites that will charge you around £100 to do this but it means that you can get spare keys cut pretty much anywhere for just a few pounds. However, you will need to inform your insurance company, which may result in you paying a little more for lacking an immobiliser. Also, your central locking won't work off the remote control anymore...
Me, I'm using the bypass code at the moment, but will (eventually) end up coughing up the £120 for a new key...
  • By the way, the "Program your car keys" option isn't really programming your key.

Sometimes the car and the (working) plip will begin to go out of synch (and as a result the plip will be a little choosy about when and how it decides to work). That procedure just allows you to resynchronise the key and the car (this will only work with the correct plip for your vehicle (though if your key has suddenly stopped working, this may be worth a try as perhaps it's just fallen out of synch)).

Had a similar issue with a Megane "creditcard" type key.

Bottom line inspite of many being on ebay is that they are not rewritable for another car, so even if you got a spare and take it to Renault, they cannot do it. Yes a right pain in the !!!!, and for the megane it's either £140 or £170 all in:eek:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Hi, I specialise in repairing remote contols, if you have renault keycards with the buttons not working, I can repair them at a reasonable price. (£25.00 - 30.00 usually) I can also supply new "virgin" keycards, or, if you have a keycard which is used i.e. from another Renault car, I can virginise it so that it can be programmed to your vehicle by a local locksmith with the correct equipment.
