I stayed just north of Newcastle once,

on the hotels web site it was £150 a night, behind the desk when I got there it was £180 a night + Breakfast

From hotel net it was £89 all in and I booked only a day before!

There's was a code in the rpoints forums somewhere which you needed to quote when you rang. I did and got the family (of 4) a room & breakfast at Thistle Bloomsbury in the centre of London for £85 a night. Don't know if the code did anything but I thought the price was quite good for a family.
