Title deeds

Options
In December I'm redeeming my mortgage in full (paying it off). My back are charging £235 administration/ sealing fee. I'm not quite sure what happens then, I assume I'll get my 'deeds', but what exactly are they? and what do i need to do to them?

Is there anything i need to know?

The land registry now keep the deeds information electronically i think - I received a letter from them stating a reference number.
if i had known then what i know now
  • You can have the paper deeds to keep as historical documents if that's what you'd like, otherwise they can be sent to the County Record Office.

Nowadays you do not need paper because your title to the property is recorded electronically. However it can be interesting - I have the deeds (this property built 1930) and they record the original land transfers back to the early 1900s - fascinating history.

  • The information held by The Land Registry proves ownership of the property.
    The deeds contain additional information.

You should keep your deeds and pass them on when you sell.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
  • I would check to see if your property is registered at the land registry. Not all properties are registered, as before a certain date (can't recall the date) it was not compulsary.
To find out go to :
    http://www.landregisteronline.gov.uk/lro/servlet/TitleSearchServlet
It costs £4 to download the pdf file with all the details, assuming your property is registered.
