...I've probably been laid off at least once a year for the past 25 years.

You aren't Santa Claus by any chance? If so...

    Dear Santa

Can I have a new laptop please?

    I've been good.

Why would there be a bad spell in construction approaching? This country is massively short of housing, so builders are going to be busy for some time to come surely? I'm sure new build houses are always going to sell at a profit, regardless of what the market says they're worth.
I've read scores of stories in the news over the last month regarding a downturn in construction. The latest was on the radio today regarding a 40% drop in activity for removal companies.

if the country is massively short of housing, why is so much of it up for sale

the 'shortage' is a scare tactic put about by vested interests, and politicians who take backhanders/funding from those vested interests
    It's a health benefit ...

Lots of houses are for sale because lots of people want to move. Some into other houses that are for sale and some (a small %age) into rented. Others are for sale because of death.

There is only a shortage of affordable (through cash or loans) houses. If they were free we wouldn't have enough to satisfy demand.

At the moment, houses wouldn't sell at half price because lenders are not lending.

Indeed, this whole "supply and demand" argument is rubbish. Theres actually about 800k EMPTY homes in this country (http://property.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/property/buying_and_selling/article2686130.ece).

Tell me again, why do we need to build new homes?

    A rising population.

    More people living alone.

There will always be some houses empty.

Some of the empty houses are not in areas where people want to live.

    Lots of houses are demolished.

OH still in planet zog! Still maintaining doing extension! I am going to keep my trap shut and just rant on here! He thinks I am great with money i.e. paid the mortgage off in 3 years, savings etc, no debt. Yeah may be great with money as we earn good money to pay all this off!! So when he starts his extension he thinks I am going to be able to raise money out of my backside!! I have told him that I am not touching the savings that we have already as we may need that - I wonder what for - may be a turn down in work - oh he does not know that -where is his head? When he is looking for his dinner I will present him with a tin of macaroni cheese one night and some baked beans the next that will may be waken him up.

Anymore suggestions please? I thought he was coming round to my way of thinking but have not convinced him yet. Some help would be greatly appreciated or you may see me on the 10 o'clock news having done something drastic to him!!!!

Drive him to the middle of nowhere, leave him there and tell him that you love him and you will collect him in several years time?

At least this way we wont be reading about you on the front pages and you can always get him back again - providing you arrange the odd food parcel, that is :D

Other than that, I can't offer any help. I would be in full on arguement terrotary now, so you are obviously a more patient person than me!
