Debt issues from the past have come back to haunt me

About 10 years ago I was very credit worthy with a number of committments like credit cards, loan, mortgage and overdraft. I lost my job and it got to the point of losing my home. I tried to discuss my situation with my creditors who would not help and just promised me visits from the bailiffs. I lost my home and decided because nobody would help to emigrate and leave all my problems behind. I am now back in the UK and it seems most of my debts have been wrote off but theres a few where the debt has been sold on and gone up from around £2000 to now £8000 which I presume is charges etc and they wont discuss anything and threatening baliffs and court. There is NO way on earth they are getting what they are demanding and telling me they wont send a breakdown of the debt.
I have come into some money and want to put it in a savings account but worried a number of companies could come out of the woodwork with extortionate charges and take it all so for now have it in a safety deposit box that is not earning me a penny but also i know its not going to be snatched off me. I have read that savings accounts are not reported to credit reference agencies but it seems they are when you open them? would my cash be safe in a savings account? could cash be taken out by the courts? I dont mind paying back what is owed but not all the rediculous charges but when i say this they wont play ball. I can easily sit here with no assets, I own nothing but my partner has a lovely home and a nice car she lets me drive.

Can I open a savings account that although the government etc would know I have it the credit agencies and my creditors have no idea?

Could my accounts get frozen or money taken out without warning?

Any other advice is welcome.

Not too sure about what may happen if it went to court, but some of these debts may not be enforcable - outside of court.

If a CCJ has not been granted on the debt, then unless it is a property related debt such as a mortgage, then it will be statute barred and you just need to write to notify that you are aware the debt is unenforcable and will not be paying it. These often get sold on to other agencies so you may need to keep sending that letter. If a CCJ has been made against the debt, then they would need to go back to court after 6 years to get it re-registered.

This site http://www.registry-trust.org.uk/ will allow you to search for CCJ's against you. Not too sure how it works as i've never had to deal with a CCJ, but hopefully someone else will be able to advise on how to find an old CCJ that has been issued against you.

Just to clarify, debts ARE NEVER WROTE OFF, unless you entered into an IVA / BR / paid / or you came to some agreement with the Creditor / DCA.
Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional

If they have not made contact with you for 6 years (5 in Scotland) the debt would not be enforceable. For mortgages the council of mortgage lender members agreed in February 2000 not to chase for debts that had been unacknowledged for more than 6 years.

Be very very careful of how you react to these debts, some people have found that debts have risen 10 fold in the intervening years.

I received nothing from them for well over 6 years but they did not have my ovrseas address so where do I stand on that? they could say they tried to contact me but because I never updated my contact details they couldnt get hold of me.

Thanks to everybody for your help so far :)
