what to do with tom sauce from pilchards?

We buy quite a lot of tinned pilchards.
DD likes them in lasgane or quiche and they make quite nice toppings for pizza or just for eating with salad or in sandwiches but there is always a lot of tomatoey/fishy sauce with them.
I often just have to pour it away down the drain as I cant think of a use.
Has anyone got any ideas where I could use it as it seems such a waste?

Oh Ive just realised this could have been posted in the food waste challenge.
Apologies!
Please can an admin move it across?

Someone on an older thread about meals for 50p used it as part of the liquid used to hydrate couscous, with tasty consequences!;)

  • You could add it to a tin of chopped toms and use it mixed with spaghetti for a cheap filling meal! Or you could add it to the sauce you put on the base of the pizza.

I love pilchards on toast and always just mush the pilchards and sauce together ,put it on toasted bread and pop it under the grill....great for the kids as a healthy lunch! lidl sardines in tom sauce are a great alternative! If you are using it as a pizza topping (great idea !never occured to me!!) I would just add the excess sauce to the pizza sauce or whatever else you are making ...just stick it all in.

    Thankyou all.
Im going to give all those a try.
I do manage to put it in the lasagne but thought it might make sarnies a bit too soggy. Never thought of just adding it to chopped toms.

Add it to a pizza topping, it will taste fishy and so you save from having to put the anchovies on!

  • I haven't had pilchards for yonks, but always mashed them up with the juice and a bit of vinegar, before spreading it on toast and then grilling. I don't know if I would like it in pizza sauce though.....
