Bargains at currysauction.co.uk

Looks like Currys have set up an auction site similar to the comet clearance auction site. A friend of mine told me about it and seems to think that it is in it's early days so might be able to get some great bargains.:T

Thanks OP. Seems that there is a reserve for all items, which normally means that you might get an item slighlty cheaper, but not at a bargain price.

What do you expext from Dixons Group???
Going to war over religion is basically killing one another to see who's got the better imaginary friend...

Yes, I spotted the reserve but they must be quite low, as I saw a Philips 37PFL5522 LCD sold yesterday for £225.00, a quick search on Google shows the same model at Empire for £529 and Currys themselves selling it for £599.

The washing machines and fridges look like they are going for quite low prices as well but I am not looking for these at the moment.

I'll keep my eye on the TVs though and may place a bid or two ;)

Update: It actually went for £215 my mistake, that makes it £235 including shipping, sounds like a great bargain to me.

    Warranties and Liability
We warrant that the auction products will correspond to the description given on the site and that the products, except as may be expressly stated on the site, will be of satisfactory quality. All other warranties, express or implied, in respect of the products are herby excluded to the maximum extent permitted by law

Unless i'm reading that wrong (which I could well be), if it works when it arrives, you have no warranty if it breaks after just an hour - unless, of course, the items have a warranty term in their description. They don't.

I'd also question why they've been swapped out, as most of the TVs appear to have been...

Surely you'd still be covered under the Sale of Goods Act? Items must be of reasonable quality, fit for purpose, yadda yadda yadda...

I don't think that applies to auctions.

    Online Auctions

The Sale of Goods Act applies to online auctions in the same way it applies to physical auctions. The 2002 Regulations grant consumers new rights that assimilate the responsibilities of persons selling through auctions to normal retail sales. These rights exist against the auctioneer where second-hand goods are purchased in an unattended auction, i.e. via the internet, telephone, fax or mail-order. Of course, auction sites, such as eBay, are normally structured so that the purchaser and vendor contract with one another. This would be categorised as a private auction, in which the vendor takes on role of a facilitator of price. Online auctioneers almost universally require in their terms of business that the bidder is required to enter into a contract with the seller after the auction has concluded. This is to be distinguished from a traditional auction, where the contract is formed at the moment the auctioneer’s hammer falls.

    57 Auction sales

(1)Where goods are put up for sale by auction in lots, each lot is prima facie deemed to be the subject of a separate contract of sale.
(2)A sale by auction is complete when the auctioneer announces its completion by the fall of the hammer, or in other customary manner; and until the announcement is made any bidder may retract his bid.
(3)A sale by auction may be notified to be subject to a reserve or upset price, and a right to bid may also be reserved expressly by or on behalf of the seller.
(4)Where a sale by auction is not notified to be subject to a right to bid by or on behalf of the seller, it is not lawful for the seller to bid himself or to employ any person to bid at the sale, or for the auctioneer knowingly to take any bid from the seller or any such person.
(5)A sale contravening subsection (4) above may be treated as fraudulent by the buyer.
(6)Where, in respect of a sale by auction, a right to bid is expressly reserved (but not otherwise) the seller or any one person on his behalf may bid at the auction.

Doesnt the distant selling act apply too as it now applied to businesses that sell on Ebay?
  • Just checked the 'help' section of their site and it states "Currys Auction items come with a 12 month warranty for repairs".

I'll check with my friend who told me about the site as he knows more.
