firebricks...

Options
Autumn is upon us and soon it will be winter. Today in Sainsbury I saw the first mince pies with Xmas designs on the box... already!!!

Anyway. I am determined to keep warm in my little old flat, and I want to get a couple of firebricks. The idea being that I am going to have a firebrick over a small gas ring to warm it up, then it will slowly release its warmth, a bit like a storage heater. This will help to take off the chill in the room where I keep my three budgies.

Question is: Can I buy the odd firebrick or two? And where are these things to be found? Surely not on the net!

Thanks for any info.

Our local Wilkinsons sells firebricks, rectangular ones and the tapered ones for the sides. Watch you don't burn the house down... :D

What about a small paraffin or calor gas heater?

The way the gas prices are going, you might be better of with a small electric heater - heating a firebrick for use in another room can't be very efficient...

    Thanks paul_h.

The firebrick is to be put just under the birdcage and then only to take off the chill, not to heat the room as such. I want to have it "on" when I am out and about and I do not want to leave a gas heater on.

I do not have central heating, nor do I want it. I have efficient gas and electric heaters but then I am a person who does not like excessive heating and if my flat is at 16 centigrades in the winter, I am fine. I turn the heat up when I have guests of course!

I find that a lower temperature and a good jumper are a healthier alternative for me, as I feel more comfortable and efficient. Cheaper, too, although I would not compromise on heat if I needed to stay warmer.
