Aldi - Medion P4220 GPS Satnav

Just spotted this on the Aldi website (here's the link - http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/2867_5970.htm)

Looks pretty good - I need a new satnav unit with European mapping, and ideally a widescreen one at that. This seems pretty good value compared to the Tomtom One XL, especially as it comes with the TMC option.

Does anybody know much about these? Or Medion satnav units in general? In particular, how easy/cheap is it to update the map data? I understand Tomtom provide free updates - would it be worth paying more for a Tomtom in order to have this feature?

Any advice much appreciated.

    Hi there

Aldi are advertising a Medion P4220 GPS Satnav for £149.99 from Sunday 18th May. Does anyone know if it's any good?

The specs seem fine to me, and it includes European mapping.

  • I was wondering if it can detect fixed speed cameras. It doesn't mention it but don't all of them do that now?

My experience with medion is that they are at the lower end of quality. I had a pc from Medion and it was like a yoyo going back to the supplier.

But that is my personal opinion

i would go for tom tom plus the service for medion is appauling, when it comes to faulty repairs/refund, there guys give you such a hard time, and will not delivery faulty items on time, you have to contact customer services over and over again before they do somthing about it.
  • Dont discount the brand. I had a Medion PC around 7 years ago sold to next door neighbour still going strong.

£150 would get you a branded unit with better support, like tom tom
  • Hi,

I bought one of these yesterday but I haven't opened the box yet as it is for a present. Should I bring it back? How much support do sat navs usually need? I've had a Medion computer for years now with no problems so I've Never experienced the customer support.

I also bought one of these yesterday great bit of kit but may be going back! Why? Well the routes it picks are very strange and indierect no matter what you change the route stays the same! Anyone else found this?

I bought a Medion SatNav from Aldi about a year ago. Think it must be the predecessor to this one.

Overall, I cannot fault it and for what I paid (£200) for a 4.3" unit with unlimited Trafficmaster and European mapping, it was better value than anything else on the market.

It also can play MP3 files and display photos. It does indeed do both, but the photo quality is rubbish (why would you want it for that) and the MP3 player interface is horrid, though works. You cannot play music at the same time as using the GPS system though.

The cradle is good and build quality is more than ok. The main thing I liked about it is the 3 year warranty. When it packs up at two and a half years old, then I will really consider the purchase good value.

I've had to call the Medion care line a couple of times. First because I couldn't be bothered to RTFM. Second time because the SD card packed up. You do get through but 'eventually' is the word to keep in mind. Really is painfully slow and on a flipping 0870 number too. Not good. They dealt with my queries professionally enough once I was through though.

Biggest negative I can see is that I cannot update it via software/cable. This means I cannot use the GPS speed camera database from PocketGPSworld (the free one). And I cannot update the maps to account for road changes. I would really love to be able to get under the bonnet of the thing more.

The battery low warning also starts a little early on my model, but certainly not a problem to ignore that.

So, would I buy another? And at this price? I think yes on balance. It's got a big screen, Trafficmaster, Euro-mapping and a 3 year warranty. Not sure what else comes close on price for all that.

    Hope this info helps someone.
