help with friend?

7 years ago my friend had run up quite a lot of debt that was made defalut on his credit report, he changed his name by deed poll and moved address. after 6 years i heard that any debt is removed from your credit file and wondered is this true. he opened a new bank account in his new name and registered on the voters roll without the other name he had and he is wondering what would happen now?

Did he notify his creditors of his new name?? Am not sure if there is any comeback if he didn't.
