An idea to promote to companies

Looking for a bit of advice....

Like most of you I have a mon-fri job which although I sometimes enjoy I am looking for something new, I feel that I am at an age (34) where if I don't move soon I will be stuck in the IT sector forever which TBH does not appeal to me.

Over the past three years I have done something in my spare time which has raised over £30,000 for local charities. The idea is very simple and can easily be done in most major cities and towns.

However the problem would if I expanded it to other cities etc it would become a full time job.

My question is does anyone think if I appraoched a large organisation (John Lewis for example) with my idea that they would take me on full time to do this?

The benefit for them would be all the events in each city would be sponsored by them and they would obvioulsy get the publicity etc that goes with each event.

Sorry but I'm a bit confused! (not hard! lol). You have a simple idea with a proven track record which you've done in your spare time. You can expand the idea to work in other cities but you see it as a problem that it would become a full time job. Yet then you ask if someone would take you on in full time employment to do it. Are you asking for someone to employ you to make money for someone else so that they get the publicity? I'd say large organisations have already got thier own publicity departments up and running already.

Is this idea something you could patent? Then you could go as a freelance publicity agent and sell to many large organisations - they would become your clients then rather than your employer.

Did you make any money for yourself whilst earning the £30k? Or did you do it for the pride and satisfaction of helping others.

Whatever it is, you obviously enjoy doing it so why not tryto make a career out of it.

    Best of luck

Hi and thanks for your reply.

Yes it was all done in my spare time, basically it is a charity event which raises money for local charities, I myself make no money from it I do it because I enjoy organising the event and have a great sense of pride once its done.

If I did want to do it in other cities then it would probably become a full time job. The company who would employ me would not make any money it would solely be for publicity purposes so they can get the good press that goes with all the events.

    Hi Moncs,

I thought that was what you mean't.

I guess it would depend on how much of a salary you want someone to pay you for doing this for them, bearing in mind that if, say for instance, you were to be employed by John Lewis, then wouldn't you be limited to putting on this charity event only in the towns/cities where they have stores?

And don't forget those large stores/companies would already have their own publicity departments set up - I mean somebody has to organise the tv ad's, press releases and sale announcements.

I think your best bet would be to set yourself up as a freelance publicist so you are not so limited. You could then charge a one off fee to the company or take a 10% cut from the money raised (obviously doing the second option you would have to inform the donators that 90% went to charity). Also, if you go freelance you may have 2 companies who are interested but not committing, you could offer a joint sponsership deal, they get the publicity cheaper, you get your cut/fee and the event goes ahead, the charity get's their money. Win, win, win, win situation!

    Good luck with it anyway.

    Hi Moncs again,

I just thought, if you were to go with only 1 large organisation surely it would mean travelling to the different towns up and down the country to organise this event?

If you go freelance you could stay local for a while and then choose which city to invade and when. This has the advantage that you could incorporate one of your events into a long weekend/trip to whatever city you are going to. i.e. set up the sponsorship, travel to the venue, carry out the event then spend a couple of days in that city afterwards if you want to.

    Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the ideas and advice, each event does take a lot of planning and probably a good few months to get everything organised. It would probably mean a few visits to each town/city prior to the event itself
