The easiest way I found to knit was by watching someone else do it! If you've got no knitters in your family then there are still a couple of options. The first is http://www.knittinghelp.com/ there's loads of videos showing the basics which will get you started in no time. It's usually best to start with something simple like a scarf or a small blanket made up of knitted squares before moving on to more complicated patterns for clothing etc.
The other option is to find someone who can teach you to knit in person, for this option I'd recommend finding a local knitting group. Try having a look on http://www.stitchn!!!!!.co.uk/fan.htm (ok so it's censored the address, it's https://www.stitchnb*tch.co.uk/fan.htm, replace the * with an i) to find one local to you. Most of the groups are free and they are usually more than willing to teach! They'll advise what's best to bring along to get you started (what size needles and what type of wool/where to get it from etc). My local group is great, we meet up in pubs and cafes once a week, have a fews drinks, a good chat and all knit together. And it's not just full of old ladies either! lol
I learned to knit as a child but quickly forgot it all until I decided to start knitting again last month. Using the videos I quickly picked it up again and I've just knitted myself a great shrug so once you've got the hang of the basics it doesn't take long to start knitting something great!0 -

if you have some patience then the knitting videos posted above are great. There are loads of books showing you how as well - have a look in your local charity shops.
Over on the oldstyle board there is a knitters thread and a knitting for chrity thread - come join us. Everyone is very friendly and can help with questions. Scarves are the easiest to start with, the baby hats (using an easy pattern).
there are lots of groups out there - I'm about to attend one next week for the very first time!!! I'm only 26 and I believe most people who attend are that kind of age group.
Best of luck
I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this responser.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!

Hi kayleigh Have you seen the appeal for the little hats for babies who are dying due to not having their wee heads covered? It was on the Paul O Grady show. I am currently knitting some at home here, and you can download a simple pattern and also how to knit it. Just log on to Save the Children's knit kit, and you can print it out. I wish you well, and hope you have as much enjoyment from knitting as we all do.:) I too learned myself when I was having my first baby and many many years later I still love it. You will be so proud of your efforts I promise. Let us know how you do. All the best, MargaretxxDo a little kindness every day.;)0
