The latest hardest ever challenge!!!

So, here goes. I am struggling to come up with some OS meals for my two young kids. Here's the complicated bit -

1) We are strict veggies (no meat, chicken, fish, gelatine, animal fat)
2) They have severe food allergies to nuts, sesame, and all pulses (lentils, beans etc)

We need to cut our food bill down further and I also want to try and vary their menu a bit. I would be SO grateful for any inspiration :j

I'd be worried that your children are in danger of not getting enough protein in their diet if they aren't eating pulses, meat or fish? I'm assuming being strict veggies that they don't eat eggs either?

Are they allergic to QUINOA? I believe it is a complete protein, and is very good for you.

I don't mean to cause offence, but is it sensible to enforce strict vegetarianism on children, given all the foods they can't eat due to allergies? Surely under the circumstances it would be better to relax the rules in order to ensure they get the nutrition the need?
Things I wouldn't say to your face

  • I am very careful to include protein in every meal they have. Their main sources are Quorn, cheese and egg. Trouble is, as you can imagine, I tend to trot out the same old meals.

    *Quorn spag bol
    *Quorn shep pie
    *mac cheese
    *Quorn sausage/mash
    *Omlette
    *H/M veg pizza
    *Veg stir fry
    *Cream cheese wraps

They haven't complained yet, but a bit more variety would be good

Tofu is atleast 1/3 the price in Asian (Chinese etc) supermarkets than the 'Cauldron' or similar version. I find it worthwhile making a trip.

If you eat dairy, Holland and Barrett sell big jars of whey protein in the body building section (!) I buy the vanilla flavour (it has almost no flavour and no sugar!) and use it in small amounts to add to soups and smoothies to lower their GI. When it's on sale, it's £5 for a big jar. Half a scoop has as much protein as an egg. I am aware than some people who have severe allergies are allergic to this so you'll have to check with your kid's doc.

Brown rice is higher in protein than white. It also has some iron it it. (Probably you know this!)

Indian grocers and supermarkets in multi-ethnic areas sell sacks of dry soy mince very cheaply. You rehydrate with stock or water and then use as you would meat mince. (Bolognese, chilli, stew etc.) It has no flavour and store for a long time.

    How about:
Quorn chilli (mild and without kidney beans)
    spanish omelet
    Quorn curry
bulgar wheat / cous cous salad
    Welsh rarebit (without worcestershaire sauce)

    Edited to add:
veggie casserole / stew (seasonal vegetables)
    mediterranean veg with Pasta
    home made vegetable pasta bake

Sorry, I posted before I read your reply!

I've tried this curry with both meat and veggie mince and think it's great.

    Veggie sausage toad-in-the hole
Gougere (basically choux pastry mixture with cheese and seasoning added, baked, serve with veg separately or baked in a ring with rataouille in the middle)
Frittata (have a look in an italian recipe book for all the various things you can put in, they're very like omelettes but slower cooked!)
