Help please! How do I remove default notice on my credit report

My first post ever, so apologies if I waffle.
I checked my credit report online and saw O2 mobile had me down as defaulted on a £14 payment in 2005? I called them and they said that when I closed my mobile account, I had not paid £14. I have never missed a payment on anything and I told them that had a request for £14 been made, I would have paid it. They claim that letters were sent out. Because of this, I was declined a remortgage by Birmingham Midshires (I have two buy to lets and a residential). Sorry for waffling!
My question is this, what can I do to remove this notice? I have paid the £14 and it shows the status as "satisfied" on my report, is ths enough or should I try to remove the default notice completely? I'm very frustrated so any advice wuold be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum
How long after closing your O2 a/c did you make the £14.00 payment?Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

If they issued a default it is a bit more than missing a payment and slapping it straight on, from what I understand there should have been a paper trail as long as your arm and a notification of the default to you. If this is the first you have heard of it I would dispute the item with the credit reference agencies (experian, equifax and call credit) and let them help you sort it out. Had you moved house or anything where the post couldn't have got to you??£34,547 (Dec 07); Current debt: £zilch (Debt free December 2010)

Hi 10past6, it was three years after closing the account.
I only paid it off last week because up until then I never had any issues getting mortgages or credit cards etc. Like a fool, I only obtained my credit report when I had a problem! The annoying thing is, I am always up to date on payments and O2 sent me an annoying two line response basically saying "tough".0 -
THanks by the way for responses.
Yes, I did move house (I rented out that property). My tenants gave me all my mail (I bought a house around the corner) and that was the only payment I ever missed.0 -

One aspect you could try, go back to where you got your credit report from, and raise a "Dispute" through them.
The problem is you've now paid the debt after 3 years which is not really a dispute, however, if O2 don't acknowledge the dispute raised through the 3rd party, then it may be cleared.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

Thanks for advice, i'll give that a go. Does my status on the report with O2 showing "satisfied" help me in anyway?0

You could say, moving address / tariffs / phone provider is one reason you was not aware of the debt.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.
