PLEASE HELP. I HAD A OVERDRAft FROM RBS (4,500.00)(have had nightmare problems with them. will be making a complaint to the banking ombusman). They agreed a loan initial @ 10.2percent, then turned me down then offered me another loan at 15.7percent, initially rejected it but had no choice to other than to accept to clear off overdraft. Before accepting told them I felt it was terrible that they were taking advantage of my finiacial situation. About 2 weeks after obtaining the loan I was in the shop using my Debit/cheque card when the assisitant told me my card had been rejected I was so shocked that I made him try 2 more times as i had money in my account. On the 3rd attempt my sister who was with me paid for the goods. I rang the digitial banking to find out what had happened and all they could tell me was that my card had been stopped about 2 weeks prior they could not tell me why. I went to my branch who told me that a condition of me getting the loan was that they would take away my card NOONE @ NO POINT TOLD ME THIS IF THEY HAD I WOULD HAVE DEFINATLY REFUSED THE LOAN. After explaining to the manager a few of the nightmare ways I had been treated since May '05 she acknowleged that I had been treated badly and that as a consequence of this she would try to get my Highland card given back to me as a gesture of good will. I have just heard today after her trying for nearly 2 weeks that the lending centre are refusing to reinstate my card. Can someone please help. I am trying to move to another bank account where I can get a current account with a debit/cheque card but fear due to my bank blacklisting me that no other bank will touch me. I have tried smile online bank but won't know until tomorrow whether there are any problems. I have 2 accounts with RBS a key account and my interest paying current account which due to them taking my card has become useless. my key account card cannot be used in shops which means trying to sort my debts out I am having to rely on credi card in shops. That's why I need a current account that gives me a cheque book, debit/cheque card. I have money in both my accounts but don't want RBS to make any more money out of me or my money.

Sorry to hear this it seems very unfair...
Do you have your salary paid in??? Have they reissued you with a cash point card instead of the debit card???
Have they taken all your overdraft allowance from you???0 -
Overdraft was converted into a loan, without informing me that a condition of me getting the loan was that RBS would take my card away. Can anyone tell whether that is legal? is it not an unfair contract term?.
update i did not get smile account as my credit is s... @ moment. Equifax credit score 331 which is poor. Can anyone tell me whether I will be able to get a bank account anywhere? I have had my bank account for 5 years and work as a locum. When I have been out of work i have lived off the overdarft because getting benfits have been impossible althought I have worked and paid into the system for over 20 years. Got into this mess due to unemployment, a messy divorce and am a single parent of an 18 year who has just gone to uni in Scotland, I am a home owner who somehow have managed to keep my mortgage paid. My problem was the overdraft and some of my credit card payments were late.
I don't want to stay with RBS because they have treated me really badly to long a story to go into in writing.
Thank you Girl power for your support.0 -
You will probably find that losing your card was not a condition of getting the loan but was just something RBS decided to do, but they don't want to tell you that. If the terms and conditions of the account don't automatically give you a cheque book/debit card then they are entitled to withdraw them at any time. They could have withdrawn them and not even offered you the loan at all. Likewise they can also withdraw an overdraft facility and demand immediate repayment at any time. Which is why I tell people on these boards to pay off overdrafts as a priority almost regardless of the APR (0% can be an exception).
As to a new account, these boards are full of people struggling to get new accounts with debit cards. My only advice is to open a basic bank account and try to upgrade later.

things like this make me mad, and I actually work for the enemy! Not really sure what you should do, is it worthwhile trying to get a basic account with another bank, I know lloydstsb will usually give a standard account with an electron card. Not got any other advice really just wanting to say you'r enot alone with troubles with rbs and their lending centre, you would not believe the grieff I have had trying to set up a joint a/c with my husband, and we both already have our own accounts with them. We have actaully given up with them completely! You would think being staff might make a differnce but they are still hopeless!Total Debt (27th Nov 08) £16,707.03 Now £5,102.72Debt Free Date [strike]Nov 2012[/strike] August 20110

I just want to say thank you personally to both Xbigman and Crazyhazy. I am going throught an extremely difficult time financially. I have about 50,000 worth of debts on credit cards and the loan from the bank. (not including my mortgage) Not because I am a spendaholic but because I have in periods of unemployment lived off creditcards and my overdraft and not claimed benefit. I am determined to get out of this hole somehow and this site given to me by my 18 year old has been a godsend. Thanks for your support it all helps and helps me to try and not despare. thank you both once again.0
