share issue - should we pay to get inherited shares?

Bear in mind that it has probably cost Computershare quite a bit to trace you and that they are not - as far as I can tell from what you have said - proposing to charge you for that.
It sounds as though they are doing quite a good job of sorting out the muddle caused initially by your MIL's inability (for quite understandable reasons - I'm not trying to assign 'blame' in a perjorative sense) to manage her affairs.
You might not like their procedures but they are standard in the industry (and possibly even legally required) - you are not being singled out. Ranting on at length about them will rouse some people's hackles, unfortunately.
I hope there's no insults in that - none are intended......0 -

although they did trace us with only one letter - we have a very unusual surname and so it was quite easy to trace us - the sheltered housing where MIL used to live told them where to find us and a quick check on the electoral register would have confirmed that the address was correct.
I knew we weren't being singled out and that anyone in our situation would be charged the same - but it is the principal of the charges that I DO object to.0 -
"why can't they issue the money and take the £69.00 from the funds"
I have no idea why they can't do that and would suggest you ask. It would seem quite a sensible approach.
I don't like the hostility you've received on here, especially as a new poster, the site is supposed to be welcoming to new people (it was to me). However a lot of people can be quite touchy about people who talk about their inheritances in terms of 'rights' - for most of us this is a windfall in unfortunate circumstances not something we've worked to build up. Although there is sympathy for you being unemployed, other posters will be unemployed or pensioners without any windfall. That said, try to ignore the h8rs !
Also, asking for interest would be a good idea - if you ask nicely and explain that none of this is your fault (which hints rather than says that anything is their fault) then you will be more likely to get some kind of concession.
Don't take out revenge on computershare over the phone - wait for them to send you the money!
p.s. I would also consider checking the unclaimed assets register and also asking computershare if there are any other shares registered in your mother-in-law's name which they can identify. You never know there may be another little windfall out there.0 -

Many thanks for your kindness and suggestions about the unclaimed assets register - we had no idea this existed, I shall certainly get hubby to check it out. I doubt very much if there are any unclaimed assets, his late mother wasn't a wealthy lady.
thanks again0 -
They wont be able to take the fee out of the money outstanding as they are not allowed to touch it.
I very much doubt you will get any interest on it anyway as the money has just been sat there waiting to be claimed. I think you only have until 2009 to claim the money as well.:rotfl:0 -
many thanks for that info - it all helps!0
