Tuition fee's up again

when i started looking at uni it was £3000 then when i started it was raised to £3070 and now for next yr 08/09 its £3145. And as well my accododation feees go up but my loan doesnt go up to match this for my first semester i will have to pay about £400 as my first loan payment doesnt cover it, how am i suppose to live. And its easy to say get a job but its really hard to find one as everywhere is looking for experience.

  • Unfortunately the loan amount goes up every year. I believe that it is linked to inflation. Your loan amount should also go up unless your parents' incomes have changed a lot as the minimum & maximum loan values also change each year. You shouldn't have to worry about the extra tuition fee as the loan will cover it. Unfortunately you still have to pay it back but there is little you can do.

As summer holidays are coming up soon, get in early and you should be able to get a full time job this summer. Temp agencies and your local council are a good start. They don't require experience for many things. If you have a car then you could look into marquee erection. They often take on extra staff in the summer. Do you have a nearby supermarket? They don't normally need experience and maybe you could continue working when at uni. Otherwise could you work at the university? I'm working in my department doing research this summer.

Alternatively you will have to cut back on your expenditure and manage your finances more carefully.

Every uni gets given money from government to distribute as hardship fund aka access to learning fund. Approach your uni to apply. The sooner the better as its usually first come first served as opposed to waiting to see who's the poorest.

Open more than one student bank account and utilise each 0% o/d account.

Join the reserves (I joined the Navy reserves).... they pay your transport and you get paid. Opportunities for all unlike normal jobs. And every company loves it on CV.

oh and don't have lazy holidays, work hard. If done well you don't need to worry about term time.

Did I hear correctly that soon unis will be able to charge what they like for tuition fees? As their removing the limit?

From what I was told in uni most will stick to the 3kish mark but some (like oxford) will charge lots more

  • Until 2010 the tuition fees will remain at about £3000 (allowing for inflation). After that there will be a vote in the Houses of Parliament if they want to increase it above this level. So it's possible but not for a little while yet and only if voted in.

i was under the impression that oxford and cambridge had made commitments not to charge the maximum? it's all up in the air at the moment anyway - they haven't decided what the cap on fees will be yet. i'd be very surprised if the richest universities, who are also under fire for not widening access, charged the most fees.

I thought it was just for those doing second degrees? Is it first timers now too? I'll be graduating in 2010 (and I'm also in Scotland) so I don't really pay much attention to changes.

they are going to stop subsidising second degrees so people will effectively have to pay what an overseas student does now, but that's separate from standard tuition fees, which go up year after year....!

going to university in scotland is probably the most moneysaving thing to do atm! ;)

Don't tuition fees only go up by a little bit? Not by thousands or anything? I'm sure Scottish fees go up too.

well in the first post it looks like £70 a year - whether that's a lot or a little depends on your financial situation i guess!

I'm sure the Scottish fees went up by about that amount too. Everything goes up, can't be expected to stay at £3000 for ever. And £3000 is extremely cheap compared to the actual cost, I'd be happy to pay it.
