Good Dell deal for £280 or a Lenovo(used to be IBM laptops) for £300. If you go for the Dell deal follow the instructions in the link to get the price down.

How about PcWorld or Dixons refurbished laptops come with 12 month warantee.
Here's one under £230 and you could get a bit more off going via quidco.

There is a refurbished Dell Latitude D600 on this site for £199 with 3 months warranty, you can upgrade the warranty to 12 months for £25, totalling £224. You can also get 10% off if your a student.
The laptop is B graded which means it'll have signs of use like a scratch or two on the case and maybe small marks on the screen.

I have one of these laptops which i bought refurbished and its still as good as ever 18 months later. The screen on mine has a small mark, but its not noticeable unless the screen is black, i.e. on boot up.
The reason these laptops are good is that so many of them are used in businesses, spare parts are easily come by, just search ebay for Dell D600 and see what comes up.I like to save the money...0
