Hi strangers!!

I haven't been on for ages ..... thought I would pop in and say hello. Things have been bad at home and me and my husband have decided to separate today. Financially I have no idea where to start, other than to say that he is not going to see me or the kids stuck and fortunately all my personal debts are now clear - the only debt left is his debt in his name. So there ..... any advice?? xxxx

Hi there Mrs S good to see you back, wish it was under different circumstances though. First things first, contact tax credits and get yourself assessed or reassessed, they are pretty quick in dealing with cases. Also get onto the council regarding single persons discount for poll tax. I'm assuming that hubby is moving out?

Hi Mrs spendalot - long time no see. Welcome back

Sorry to hear of your separation. Have you checked entitledto to see what your entitlement will be once you have separated. That will be able to give you an indication of what your income will be. You can then work out your expenses and see what your shortfall will be and what sort of figure your husband will need to provide.

Hope you are ok x x

Sorry to hear about you and your OH, I dont really have any first hand experience of the financial side of separating, but all I would say is don't make any snap decisions about financial arrangements while things are still very raw. Just take your time, keep lines of communication open and think about putting everything in writing, so that there are no misunderstandings or ambiguity. My feeling is that the more you play things 'by the book', the lower the risk of arguments and resentment.

It's lovely to see you back though hun. :)
