Debt collector - advice appreciated

I sold some things on Ebay a couple of months ago and accued some listing fees. Normally, the fees are paid automaticaly via my bank card, however, I'd had my purse stolen recently and forgot to update my card details wth Ebay, so the fees were not paid.

The following month (last month) I had a letter from a debt collection agency, saying that I owe them the amount of the fees. I realised what had happened and contacted Ebay who advised me to just pay them the fees, which I did there and then. They now show me as having a balance of £0 owing.

I then had a further letter from the debt collectors saying that I owed the amount of the Ebay fees plus £8 - presumably some sort of fee they have added on between sending the first and second letter. I called them immediately to tell them that Ebay had advised me to settle the debt with them and I'd done so. They told me that I shouln't have done that - I should have settled with them.

Today I have had a further letter threatening court action, saying that I owe them £8 and that I must not contact Ebay again - all contact should go through them.

I know it's a really small amount of money, but it's the principle so I'd really appreciate some advice. Am I obliged to pay them the £8?

Iam absolutely astounded that Ebay send the debt collectors, considering how many ripoff scams they happily list.

I think this 'principle' could cost you more(not just money) if it goes on.... i think i would just pay it...??

    Hope it goes ok.
