I have seen a few of these gone out recently.

I'm only guessing here but looking at the trend, it appears to be those that they have either lost track for a period of time or had multiple employers.

  • This is the time that the Inland Revenue is dealing with cases where there are not complete employment records held on their computer system they like to have the years settled before they are required to pay any interest on possible repayments - for 2003-4 this will be after 31st January 2005. If they have said you have not used all your personal allowances then it is likely you are due a tax repayment so gather your details and send them in..make sure you send a covering letter explaining what you were doing during any gaps in your employment(e.g. not working,at college, jobseekers etc)
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

When you are employed your tax affairs are dealt with by the office dealing with your employer. If you move jobs alot then your tax record will move from one office to another. This takes time as the tax office doesn't know you have moved until either you or your previous employer or new employer tells them. Sometimes people move so often that there appears to be a gap in employment and at the end of the tax year they will write out asking you to confirm all your periods of employment and unemployment. This is to ensure that their record is accurate and also to ensure that the correct amount of tax was collected during that tax year. If they have said you have unused allowances then that would indicate that you may have paid too much tax and are due a refund.
Asking for a "Statement of Earnings" is the part of the Inland Revenues Plain English Policy. They are really asking for a copy of your P60 which you should have received at the end of the tax year (5th April) from your last employer if you were employed. If you have moved jobs alot it would also help to give them copies of your P45's which you should have received when you left each job.

I wouldn't worry too much, if you do owe any tax the Inland Revenue will not start collecting it until at least 6th April 2005. If you owe a substantial amount you can ask for it to be collected over more than 1 year.
If you have more than one job at a time you will probably have all your tax free allowances against your main job and your other employers should be operating a BR (basic rate) tax code. This means they should be deducting tax at 22%. They will only know to do this if either you or the Inland Revenue tell them to. You need to keep in contact with your tax office and they will ask for all the information they need to ensure your tax record is accurate. If you move from job to job don't rely on your employer to keep the Inland Revenue informed as sometimes they take a long time to get round to doing that.
