My local co-op still has free carrier bags, you just help yourself.

I do have one of their fair trade bags for life that I paid for and use constantly.

i spoke to the lady at my local co-op today and apparently the area has run out of bags for life!! the free cheap bag situation is only tempory!! she suggested that may shoppers are only too happy to pay 10p a bag each time and not recycle and therefore they have run out and have to use old stock free bags!!

some people have more money than sence!!!

My local co-op now has compostable carriers at 6p each, which I think is a good compromise between convenience for customers and caring for the planet.

I bought some bin liners from Co-Op a few days ago and noticed that they are now degradable.

"This bag will fully degrade to carbon dioxide, water and a small amount of inorganic residue after approximately 4 years in the domestic waste stream. This compares to conventional plastic taking over 100 years to degrade."

They work out at about 21p each, better value than the Kleeneeze ones which are 30p each.

    OK, back to topic. :p

There was a full page advertisment in our local paper last Friday from our local Rainbow Foodstore about carrier bags. I can't find the paper now but the gist of it was that they will be charging 6p for the thin compostable carrier bags, 10p(ish) for bag for life and then 99p for the fairtrade cotton cloth bags. They will no longer be giving away free carrier bags but in the run up to this (can't remember the date it starts) they will be selling the cloth bags for 49p - well worth it as they are really good.

Coops are a bit confusing because our Rainbow Foodstores come under 'Anglia Regional Co-operative' but our small local coop stores come under 'East of England Co-operative' so I think at the moment it is just in the Rainbow stores - I meant to ask my 'local' if they were doing it too but forgot to ask last time I was in there.

I think no free carrier bags is a great idea and that the coop should definatley be leading the way on this. I notice so many people sing their own bags now I don't think it would be a huge shock to people and yes we will always forget sometimes but having to pay when we do will help us to remember in future.

I have to say that I love our local coop - it used to be Heads or Budgeons and when it changed it was great...I can now get a chilled bottle of Fairtrade wine when I fancy one, they have pre-packaged wholefoods from a wholefoods cooperative that is only 20 miles away, their ownbrand tea/coffee/sugar is all fairtrade and they sell Tahini - I can't even get that in Tesco!!
