Good Morning lil_miss_sunshine
Thanks for your message.
I'd know who had done what, because they would want paying for it and if they weren't getting their money, I'm sure they would be chasing me - lol
One of the options is this - if an advertiser agrees to place an advert, the promoter would give me their details, I'd contact the business owner for their info etc, and then I'd know how much was due to each promoter.
I have some literature etc that the promoters can use to get started.
Hope this helps.

Without wishing to put a damper on your ideas, I think you are grossly underestimating the current market already for this kind of thing and if you'd done any research you'd have already realised this.
You've got to look at it from a punter's point of view. If you wanted a decorator or mechanic (and didn't know anyone who could recommend one), where would you look? Would it be a case of pulling out the Thomson Local or Yellow Pages or would you go to some website that you've never heard of?
The same applies to physical items too : you're not going to waste time looking on some random website when you've got Ebay at your fingertips and to a lesser extent, Adtrader, Loot, etc.
If you'd been the first to do this when the internet first arrived then you'd be laughing now, but the market is already saturated with this kind of thing. Businesses aren't going to pay to advertise if you can't show them you've got big traffic levels (which you won't be able to if you're only just starting out at this). If you've little to no traffic then there's no point in advertising because no-one will see it. It's a catch 22 situation I'm afraid.
For this to work (ie. make you money) you're going to need to invest a shedload of cash into marketing it to get you noticed at all - never mind get you noticed amongst the thousands of other players already doing this - and things like Adwords and SEO (search engine optimisation) don't come cheap (and I know because this is my line of work).

I strongly disagree with this. Wondering if you're trying to scare SallyUK into paying you lots of unnecessary cash for your services? SallyUK has a great idea. I only normally use Yell for my searches but if I knew one that was localised & also supported charities etc I'd use it. Granted SallyUK needs to advertise but you can do that without spending too much. There wouldn't be a great deal of point spending a fortune on an ad site that is still in the throws of gaining advertisers so I think SallyUK is doing a good steady job of it. The site is really user friendly & has bags of potential. An area I used to live in, distributed local directories for each town & I always used that, never used Yellow Pages.Yell. Everything I needed locally was there. Personally, I've not seen any 'localising' websites like this. I've bookmarked it for my future use. I also own 2 businesses at the moment & I've advertised one already with SallyUK & instead of taking the 6 month advertising I did it for a year & I'm going to be advertising the other business (when I can think of a nice write up for it!) in the next couple weeks.
SallyUK I think it's a shame when you have an idea like this especially that will give such good support to charities & especially where they let the advertiser choose their own charity, someone always has to come along to try to put it down. I say I'm a bit jealous I never thought of doing this kind of site myself!!! I don't think there's anything too constructive in what Snooze is saying. Keep up the great work SallyUK.0 -
Hello Charmed
Thank you very much indeed for your comments, they're greatly appreciated, and thanks too for being one of the first from MSE to place an advert.
I hope to keep it as user friendly as possible and will keep the focus on local.
I always found it very annoying when using the search engines on other sites, to be given a huge long list of unrelated things, that I hadn't even been searching for! lol
Sure, the Free ad papers are a good idea too, but even though they have everthing categorised, you still have to read through each advert to find the ones that are in your area or nearby. I thought that by having each town listed etc, that it would make it easier for people.
However, I'm working on it daily and hopefully out of small acorns,,,,,, lol
Thanks again for your encouraging words.

In fact, I have just found your website by doing a search on your IP.
Half a dozen ads for the entire UK isn't particularly confidence-inspiring for people to part with their cash is it?
Considering the above, your fees are laughable :
Classifieds Dating £2.00
Dating (With Photograph) £3.00
Items Under £49 Free
Items £50 - £99.00 £0.50
Items £100 - £499.00 £1.00
Items £500 - £999.00 £1.50
Items Over £999.00 £2.00Motoring Ads (Until sold) £ 5.00
Property Ads (Until sold) £20.00
Home Business (Work from home) £10.00 for 6 months
Local Tradesmen £12.00 for 6 months
Small Shops and Businesses £15.00 for 6 months
Larger Shops and Businesses £30.00 for 6 months
Charities Free
Non Profit Making Organisations Free
Personal Webpage Listing £35.00 for six months
Own Website - Maximum 5 pages £140.00
:rotfl:
Sorry but if you want to get people coming through your site you're going to need to have something for them to read and 6 ads is not quite enough. On the other side of the coin, as mentioned in my previous post, businesses aren't going to advertise in a place where no-one goes. I really can't see this working, sorry.
Rob
(Coming from someone who originally said about using Google or Yell or other famous sources, this person searched your IP instead!!!)
I think your prices are fine SallyUK, I wouldn't have advertised with you if I thought different, & thank you for the combined discount you gave me for advertising. I don't understand why this particular poster is trying so hard to put your site down. If you could send me a banner or something for your site, I'll add it on to all my websites as a link to help you shift a bit further up on Google.
I'll also have a speak with a few of my affiliates & see if they'd be interested in advertising with you.0 -
Thanks again Charmed, I'll forward you a link.

I don't even know why I'm even bothering to waste my time replying to this but your argument is so flawed it's beyond belief.
You say that you've never seen such a website where you can search by region and Sally's is the first of its kind. !!!!!!?! If you truly believe that then you have absolutely no idea of how to use the internet. To use your own example about Yell, there is a very clear box at the top of the page that you type your location in to or all or part of your postcode which, when you click the search button brings up all the businesses in your area. And so does every other e-directory out there (all 10,000+ of them :rotfl: ). I mean, have you even looked on google to see what the competition is? Type in "business directory" and watch google churn out 111 million results.
If you disagree, please show me which of the major directories that people know about do not let you search by location. I am waiting...
I'm all for supporting great ideas and helping them along but as mentioned before, this one just won't work because of the existing competition. Furthermore, the site looks like it's been designed by a 2 year old and URL is far too long. Do you really think people would type in blah-blah-blah.com when looking for something or ebay.com or yell.com? The URL is short and easy to remember for a reason...
I've been in the eCommerce business for nearly 10 years and see this kind of idea on a near-daily basis; believe me it won't work.

I've not set out to be in competition against Ebay or Yell - these two sites have not once given me what I've been looking for whenever I've searched in the past. You cannot see at a glance what is available in each local area. Some sites give you a long list of unrelated rubbish when you do a search.
I'm not aware of Yell or Ebay, donating any % of their adverts to charity etiher or offering people the chance to earn some money for themselves??
So because YOU don't think it will work, and because YOU don't like the URL, does that mean that I should just give up! lol.
Remember I'm not allowed to give out the details of the website on MSE, but because you're an expert, you set out to find it all by yourself.
Because YOU don't like it, there's no reason to rubbish it.
I'm continuing to work on the site on a daily basis, so you never know, one of these days, it might just be to your liking, eh?
Thanks for your comments anyway.
