we have had an electric shower fitted in the bathroom it is used no more than 10 mins a day but should we switch the unit off and then turn it on when we want a shower. It is on permantly so it can be used at any time but is this cost effective. How long would we have to wait for hot ater if we switched of the unit?

An Electric shower has the heating element inside it. So there would be a switch to Power it, you don't use any electricity. When you get in the shower and press the button on the shower unit, that is the time you start to use electricity.
With electric shower you do not have to wait for the water to heat up, it is instant.

switch it off, it won't save any electricity (a penny maybe), but might stop it setting on fire, and it will take the same time to warm up
When it's on (heating water, and water flowing), it's about £1/hour
Do you think leaving it on is a fire risk? or is the risk the same as any appliance left on?0
