Don't know if this is still the case, but in Spain and France adding a dairy spread to bread used to just not happen. Spanish kids used to be sent to school with a morning snack of a roll with a piece of chocolate in it :D and bread is dipped in salad dressing - ie wine vinegar and oil - delicious:)

I grew up near Girona in Spain and we never ever used spreads or butter. We had bread with nearly every lunch and dinner - fresh baguettes not pre-packed - and we'd cut a tomato in half and smear the bread with it. It's delicious. I've tried it since moving here with Hovis bread and it didn't quite taste the same :rotfl:I still smother salads with oil and vinegar, can't stand salad cream or mayonnaise as they mask the taste, whereas oil and vinegar intensify it. Makes me want to go back ;)

Somebody just sent me this e-mail .......

    Pass The Butter .... Please.

I feel quite sick reading your post, it's shocking and I had no idea it's practically plastic! Yuk!
  • I'm lactose intolerant, so butter isn't an option for me. Even most margarines are out as they contain whey and/or buttermilk as a flavouring.

The ingredients in my spread of choice (Vitalite) don't concern me - essentially just vegetable oil, water and salt. It doesn't have hydrogenated fats or anything I can't pronounce on the label. It's certainly nowhere near "plastic" - a comparison I believe is a myth anyway.

My answer would be neither anyway, I only ever use spread when I feel it's necessary - e.g. with marmite on toast. And in baking, I use packet Stork if required but my favourite cakes are naturally dairy free so it isn't an issue.

You won't find a product called 'margarine' in the shops.

  • I must be the health food brigade's despair. I am a child of the 2nd world war and when rationing came to an end, my mother said that we would never have margerine in the house again. I have never had margerine in the house. I cook with butter and bake all the cakes etc with it and an still alive to prove it
    ;)
  • prefer butter and use it when I can, but if money's tight I buy marg - sod what's in it, if its what I can afford it's what we eat.

I am allergic to dairy so I have to use Pure dairy free soya spread. Just looked at the ingredients and it contains soya oil, vegatable oils, salt, and a list of added vitamins. Oh, and the back of the packet informs me that while it contains 14g of saturated fat per 100g, butter contains 54g.

Doesn't sound like plastic to me. Even if that stuff about it being only one molecule away from being plastic, etc, is true...well, we share something like 96% of our DNA with chimpanzees but we're still pretty different! Doesn't bother me.

My Pure works really well for everything I use it in.

Mind you, I have never tasted butter.

I refuse to eat margarine...Why...read on
Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavourings.

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and
    only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

    And now, for Margarine..

Very High in Trans fatty acids.

Triples risk of coronary heart disease .
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..

    Lowers quality of breast milk.

    Decreases immune response.

    Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

    You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

    * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

    * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to butter them up')!

Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.
