Need help with energy supplier!!!!

Hi everyone,
I have recent got my bill from British gas, it is nearly double for the quarter than the last one (£136.75 to £253.63) i called them as soon as i got the red letter cause i dont want to get into trouble again. They offered me a monthly direct debit which including "projected usage" came to £70 per month. My budget simply cant handle that amount (there are debts outstanding that the BR didn't cover).
So i asked if i could have a card meter fitted, i have one already for the electric so no problems. They then say "yes ok that'll be £30 for the priviledge" i just want to pay my gas bill and move supplier before i get into trouble. If i was on benefit then yes for nothing. aaaaggggghhhhh
Can anyone tell me how to approach this company (that doesn't take an hour on the phone my bill doesn't like it) I've told them £20 a month on top of usage is to much and i dont want to be charged for the meter but i also dont want it to become a bad debt so they "enforce" the meter ie court.
Any thoughs greatfully recieved
