Many moons ago (prior to 2000) I held an account with Abbey National, and I had a loan / credit card which I apparently defaulted on. As I stopped using Abbey around 10 years ago as far as these apparent debts is concerned, I heard nothing from them until 2002 when Credit Security Limited (CSL) contacted me to arrange for payment of this debt. As I was young and naive, I offered to make payments as a gesture of goodwill, of £10 each month. I was at the time a full-time student. Since then, I have developed an exemplary credit rating. However, I have also been made aware of my rights. the national debt helpline suggest that I am within my rights to stop paying and ask for proof of a debt from CSL. Is this the case, can I stop payments pending proof of a debt or does this payment for effectively 6 years at £10 each month via standing order mean that I need to clear the debt having 'admitted liability via payment'?

Try the "payments suspended pending them supplying copy of the agreement" approach.
Remember the 12+2 days to enable them to send the correct documents and then if no response 30 days before they commit an offence.
Get the wording of your letter correct (there are many threads quoting the letter to write) and for good measure ask for any and all documents between them and you, the original lender and you and any third party that may have had interest at any time that they may hold containing data referring to you about this matter.
Don't phone anyone, don't admit anything and don't sign any of your letters.
This may go away!0
