I have been reading all the accounts of old style money saving and it has made my husband really nostalgic. I dusted off the slow cooker and made home made soup today and intend to try a gammon in the slow cooker overnight and then make more soup. Husband is in disbelief as he loves real british food but had to take second place to our four daughters who turn their nose up at traditional food.
You have made my husband really happy , if rather surprised.
The last time I made a big pot of pea and ham soup from a ham shank he went to the pub and told everyone about this and they then went home demanding why their other halves did not do this. I got some very frosty looks for the next few days.

Old Style is one of the friendliest boards and one of the first I look at. Those pennys really do mount up just by making little changes to your everyday routine and the gossip is free ;)

Ols style is the first one I look at too, talking of nostalgia, I love Rabbit, my mother could make it taste like chicken. The first and last time I cooked it you could tap your shoes with it ;D

She also cooked and stuffed bream I loved that too but wouldn't have the patience to take all the scales off like she used to do.

I really loved christmastime, she kept her own chickens and killed them herself, I used to help pluck and stuff them, I also loved being there when she would make the puddings and boil them for hours in our old boiler and the kitchen would be full of steam. We'd all have a stir of the mixture and make a wish.

She would put a 'ticky bit' (old sixpence) in each of them and being the youngest I was most often allowed to 'find' it ;D

My brother and I loved her bread puddings and although I do one which could be considered a 'posher' version he says it will never be as good as her basic one cos it was hers and smacked of home and her.

Crikey I made loads of typos in this :o
Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

I love this board as well, I feel encouraged to try new recipes etc., and also to go back to the old ways my Mum and Gran used (she was very thrifty, had to be during the war!) I now use my slow cooker every other day thanks to you all and my husband is very pleased about that.

I also enjoy the chatty style of this board, it has the feel of a coffee morning about it and yet I am learning so much!

Ahhhhhhhhhh Have I been attending a coffee morning for months on end and not realised ;D I'M A HOUSEHUSBAND GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!!! ;D

I often wonder what the past generations would think of us swapping these tips like golden nuggets when to them it was just plain old common sense. Having said that once you get into it it becomes so normal and 'common sense' that you have to remind yourself sometimes that the newbies don't always know these things. It's nice to pass info one and feel you might have helped a little bit
