You can get tins of mixed beans, or any of the single varieties would be fine.
Humous should be low in cholesterol as it contains chick peas, olive oil (a mono saturate) tahini (made from sesame seeds) lemon juice, garlic, paprika and salt. It's very easy to make yourself and the only real outlay would be the tahini, which is necessary for authenticity but it's fine to leave it out (I often miss out the garlic because I don't like it).
Basically, if you cut down on fatty meat and full fat dairy and don't have a lot of eggs then anything goes.
Here are some ideas from the Flora site:
Wholemeal roll with Flora Original spread, filled with tuna and sweetcorn, lettuce and tomato.
Multi-grain bap with Flora Original spread, slices of lean chicken breast and avocado.
Canned sardines and cucumber between two slices of wholemeal bread and thinly spread Flora Original.
Wholemeal pitta pocket, Flora Original with grated low fat cheese, with chopped celery and tomato.

How about guacamole with vegetable sticks to dip in it?0 -
Maybe some roasted mediterranean veg with couscous? Or a lentil salad?
Might be worth a look round the salad bit at Tesco (or M&S:D  ) for a bit of inspiration then adapt it to low-cholesterol. They used to do a sweet chilli and noodle salad which was lovely
I'm not really clued-up on this sorry! :rolleyes:0 -
Pulses, oats and fruits plus oily fish are all good on low cholesterol diets. You can get (or make) oatbran bread which is quite nice and the Flora pro-active spreads and yoghurts do work although are quite expensive. I don't like commercial hummus and so make my by blending chick peas, a little tiny bit of tahini and lemon juice and rind and black pepper - I don't add any oil and it's nice.
cous cous salad is nice (just cous cous mixed with chopped peppers, spring onions, tomatoes, cucumber, raisins, a few flaked almonds and some chopped white meat chicken, dressed with a little low fat salad dressing), and so is pasta salad (tuna, pasta and sweetcorn (and any other salad stuff you like)mixed with hellmanns extra light mayo)Jane

have you tried some wholemeal pitta breads served with some of the salads?
I was reading a article about lowering cholesteral last week. It recomended oats and wholewheat products. I have been using organic brown rice and wholewheat spagetti and pasta for ages now. I also try to eat oastosimple as this will help lower the cholesteral. Red wine can also lower it
you could make him mackeral salad with pasta or rice with brown pittas'If you judge people, you have no time to love them'
