Hello, I'm not very good at cake making but want to make a " 5 0 " cake but not sure where to start with the tins, is it worth renting them or does it work out just as cheep to buy them? Also are the cake release sprays that places like lakeland sell also worth it or just stick with greecingthe tin?

You can rent tins fairly cheaply or you could try baking in a loaf tin to create the 5 and a large circular tin for the 0 and cut out a circle from the middle.Use buttercream to sort of cement it together and once the icing is on it'll disguise it!
The cake release spray is good but quite expensive. I use a mix I found on the internet which works just as well but costs a lot less. It's basically equal volumes of plain flour and trex or white flora and half the volume of veg oil. I used cup measures to measure out but it makes loads and if you don't make many cakes you won't use it all. When you've measured out the ingredients you need to mix it until it makes a smooth paste and use a pastry brush to give the tin a thin layer. Make sure all of the tin is coated including any nooks and crannies. I've not had a stuck cake yet using it. It keeps in the fridge for quite a long time too.
Good luck.:smileyhea0 -
I have made a number 5 from two circular cakes, placed on top of each other to make a number eight shape. Use some greaseproof paper to make a template and then !!!!! the shape through with a cocktail stick. The same can be done for the 0. (straighten the bottom of the top of the number 8 and the top of the bottom of the number 8 shape in both cases to have a wide centre IYSWIM!)
