Want to upgrade my bike

i would really appreciate any advice as i am thinking about upgrading my current bike. i have a Carrera town and country bike and its ok but i would like something a bit more comfortable (it has no suspension), click gears (it has grip shift and i hate them) and maybe disc brakes instead of v ones. i am looking to spend maybe 300 to 350 pounds so not much in cycling terms. am hoping local bike shop will offer me something for mine as a trade in. i use it to cycle to work, 5 miles there and 5 miles back and so whilst not used off road i do use it on lanes and cycle paths which are a bit rough and bumpy. dont want anything too heavy. i have had a look at a few, a marin at £430, which is more than i can afford and a GT which i think was about £350. also seen some giant one. i changed from a really cheap mountain bike about 3 years ago to my current one and now want another change without spending too much.
if any cycling people can help me out or give me a view i would be very grateful.
thanks in advance.

HI,
I would also check with your work as my company are part of the government bike to work scheme as part of thier CSR thing,
The idea is that the company buys the bike and claim the tax (and a bit more i think from the govt), you pay a percentage of the cost for 12 months as a "rental" then when the 12 months is up you pay a small percentage for the bike.
It has meant that a colleauge of mine managed to get a bike worht around £700 for only £200. (partly because they bought the bike on sale to start with thou)
