BT charges/moving house

We have been with BT for a while,18 months ago we took a Broadband package out,it costs us nearly £200.00 every quarter,we are moving house soon and BT are looking £124.99 to put a phone line in,We are thinking of going Mobile Broadband,anyone any views of Mobile Broadband?. ,and Bt are charging an extra £4.50 because we dont pay by direct debit,Bt are rip off merchants.

first obvious question - is your new house in a virgin enabled area? you may still need to pay BT to put a line in but after that it should be minimum phone/broadband charges if it is

you could also ask them what deals they can give you on broadband as you've seen some good deals from other providers - should get you a few quid off the monthly charge at least

if by mobile broadband you mean using your mobile phone then no don't even think about it the speed is a lot less than a fixed line, you will have download usage issues etc...........

You can get a package from virgin with broadband and phone line, without involving bt at all. Pretty sure the installation fee from virgin is less than 124.

Depends what you what the broadband for and how fast you want it. Whilst I know others may have had issues with virgin, we have had no problems at all. Hubby is an IT engineer and makes alot of extra cash sorting out BT broadband connections for people. He reckons virgin is the best broadband out there. Have a read of martins articles on these services and compare what you want with cost.
Just for info we recently got an offer from virgin for being a loyal customer. We got a V+ tv box (records 2 channels whilst you watch a third) kept our original box which they moved upstairs. These are on the top TV package. Plus phone with all local,and national calls included (up to 60 mins per call) with cheaper mobile and international calls,plus 20 meg broadband for £65 per month and a one off £30 installation fee. As a new customer you may find you get an even better offer lol. Depends what you use your broadband for and how much you want to pay. Also remember no sky channels on virgin.
No provider is perfect, but we have found virgin to be exactly what we want and need.

BT and Openreach are supposedly separate companies in the fact that they have separate systems.

BT was forced by OFCOM sometime last year to ensure that Openreach charged them the same price as every other Telecommunications fixed line operator when installing a new line or reconnecting an existing line for people who move house.

Unfortunately if you do go with BT you are stuck with them as your phone provider for 12 months otherwise they charge you to get out of the contract. However there is an advantage if you have a BT phone line that is if there is a fault on your line you can contact BT yourself and get it fixed, rather than having to go through the company. BT isn't allowed to talk to directly if another company provides telephony services or broadband services and there is a fault on your line.

All other fixed telephone line companies, broadband providers and mobile companies charge you extra if you don't pay by direct debit. BT are just copying them.

ai had the same thing with BT but found this and quoted it to their CS dept so I got the cost reduced eventually.

Can't see you getting Virgin in Northdown.
I'd get BT to put your phone line in & then take out Sky BB & Talk (assuming you have Sky or intend getting it)

mobile broadband as in the usb device that allows you to go onto the internet wireless.

They are good, however check to make sure the area you are in is a 3g area, otherwise it will be dial up speed.

if you do go ahead with one,
make sure:
1. you keep an eye on the downloads (they can hit you hard depending on the tariff you are on)
2. dont use it down south! Straight away its an international data roaming charge, and you could pay big money (£8 + per mb.

By the way, for anyone considering signing up with BT or Virgin (but particularly BT), I suggest you Google for "BT" and "Phorm".

BT in particular do not deserve to be given anyone's money, bunch of crooks (allegedly).

We moved into a house that had been empty for about a month so no line rental paid. Previous owner waas with talk talk, who we wanted to be with. They couldn't turn the line back on. We had to pay bt to switch the line back and turn it on-£125 and then bt contract for 12 months as couldn't afford to get out of it. Wanted to switch to direct debit to avoid the £4.40 payment charge and save £1.25 on line rental, our bill is normally around £40 a quarter, but they wanted £50/month direct debit because they included the set up charge in our 'average' bill!! Bt seem to have the market sewn up in NI.

Its not BT,s fault that Talk Talk who could if they wanted to will not connect a line at your new address,and continue to tell people to get a line from BT because its cheaper for Cherry Picking Talk Talk to do this.;)
