Credit card and loan debt from 1997

A friend of mine has been contacted out of the blue today by a Debt Collection firm to say they have discovered £5000 credit card debt plus a loan debt dating from 1997. They have advised my friend that they need this paying urgently.

There has been no mention of this debt before, and my friend thought all her debt had been sorted out some years ago.

Can this company insist on payment, or as it is 11 years ago, can no further action be taken legally?

You are welcome - Good luck to your friend getting it sorted

The DCAs don't like it when people know their rights so they will probably play games, if they do pop back and post here, someone will have seen or done it before and be able to help out. (Tell your friend not to sign the letters too, some DCAs have been reported as knocking up 'photocopies' of signed paperwork - not so much in this type of situation but it can't hurt to be careful)
