John Lewis has always offered a 5 year guarantee on TVs. If you see a TV elsewhere and they sell it they will also price match and give the guarantee

Yep, not really a grabbit!
Also, wherever you get your tv from, you have statutory protection beyond any one year guarantee/ warranty given.Gone ... or have I?0 -

This is very true - generally speaking Trading Standards say that any electrical item should last for six years when used for normal domestic purposes - should your item fail within that time they will help you get a percentage of the purchase price back from the retailer - the percentage being on a sliding scale of how many years into the 6 years you are - for instance 3 years old might get you 50% back - whichever way don't ever buy a 5 year warranty on anything electrical - the shop is just charging you for what they have to do by law anyway!0 -
As stated JL have had a free 5 year warranty on all tvs for a while (maybe always I'm not sure).
Please do have a check on threads on audio visual type forums (avforums etc.) as there is a lot of information on getting a price match from other stores (i.e sound and vision is a popular one).
For example a Panny PX80 can easily be picked up for less than £699 from JL with the 5 year warrany.
(unless you are in scotland, they seem to follow a slightly different set of price matching rules)

Sorry but that is an incredibly inaccurate interpretation of the law.
Items are covered for up to six years, depending on the item in question. Therefore some items may be six years, but some may be six months.
After a reasonable time has passed, the retailer can elect to refund a proportion of the price paid, or to repair or replace the item. You only have the right to elect for a refund within a short time (the 'reasonable time') of you buying the item.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Six years is the time quoted to me by Trading Standards when I had a problem with a DVD player bought from Tescos which was out of warranty - I was also told the same amount of time when I worked as a temp for Comet retail AND that Comet always cave in when Trading Standards get involved.
I agree about the part refund or repair bit - but either is just as good IMHO
Im not a solicitor so I dont know what the law says - can only pass on what both Trading Standards and Comet told me.0 -

Q3. Are all goods supposed to last six (or five) years?
No, that is the limit for bringing a court case in England and Wales (five years from the time of discovery in Scotland's case). An item only needs to last as long as it is reasonable to expect it to, taking into account all the factors. An oil filter would usually not last longer than a year but that would not mean it was unsatisfactory.
Demonstrates that you are most definitely, wrong!Gone ... or have I?0
