Query about defaults

When do defaults drop off your credit reports??? I have a disputed default - had various letters off debt agencies discussed in other posts on here and the letters have now stopped as I have asked for proof of CCA etc.
Anyway - I contacted the originator of the debt - NatWest and they can't find any trace of my original debt and can't find me anywhere on their system. The default is dated 23/09/02 so will be 6 years old very soon. Does this mean it will drop of my credit report - I contacted Experian as it's a disputed default and they have issued a Notice of Correction but they have said they can't do anything unless NatWest put them straight - which they won't do as they can't find any records - Aaargh!!!! I am so sure that I paid this off years ago but I can't get shot of it!
Surely if NatWest can't find any records then this means that it is gone???
I'm so confused now - why they can't just say to Experian 'we do not have records so go ahead and wipe it off!!!'

This default will disappear from your report in September this year.
Do you need it gone before that?
You could write to Natwest's "Data Controller" disputing it, but if Natwest digs their heels in then it might take till September (or longer) to take a dispute through to resolution.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Nah - there's no rush - It's just annoying to see it sitting there glaring at me just saying to lenders - "go on refuse her - you know you want to!!!"
