Everlasting periods and norethisterone

Hello.
For 2 years I have had 2-3 week long periods.
Sometimes I have had only a few days before the next one starts!
After finally deciding to do something about it, I have been to the doctors and the specialists and various blood tests, poking abouts and 2 scans show everything is perfect!
Anyway, the specialist has now written to say I can pop to my GP for a prescription of norethisterone (hope that is spelled right, I've left the letter downstairs and its too hot to get it!)
Has anyone taken it? I have to be on it for 3 months to try and get a proper cycle established.
One problem is..... after 2 years of silliness I have gone 18 days with no period and there is still no sign of one!!!

Hi Liz
I have taken Norethisterone tablets in the past and they are GREAT !!
I was put on them for 6 months because i had very heavy and long lasting periods and they worked straight away ...and were a real life saver !
I have also taken them before and during a holiday to " delay " my period...
You get 30 tablets in a box and take one tablet either 2 or 3 times a day.
The last time i was given them was 2 yrs ago and i still carry the remainder in my handbag ... mine have a long date on them , they were manufactured in 2005 and expire in oct 2010 ...
I've never had any problems at all while taking them ....
You could always get the tablets and keep them incase you need them ....
Hope this helps a little .....
Good luck ...." When I'm good I'm very good , but when I'm bad I'm better " ~ Mae West ..0 -
Thank you!
I was reading the side effects on the internet (always a mistake) and they include long periods and depression, both of which I have already!
I'm going to speak to the doctor tomorrow (she's phoning between 8 and 8.30am....) and I think I'll get the tablets but save them until if/when things go haywire again.

Hi Acey,
I had the same problem a while ago, I do sympathise, I felt totally worn out and fed up with it!!
I have never taken the tablets you have been prescribed, but finally got prescrived provera tablets which sorted things out, touch wood!!
Anyway, good luck whatever you choose, however, personally I would advise against taking to much on board from the internet - generally it is only those who have had bad experiences that you hear from, and so many sites give an unbalanced view.
best wishes

Ive had northisterone many times in the past, I dont think anyone really likes going away having a period on holiday so if Im due on then I always get these tablets to stop my period.
I have never had any side effects with them, take one tablet 3 times a day......they are fantastic
I personally would say try them and if they do not have side effects then carry on, if on the other hand you feel any side effects at all just stop immediately.0 -
I was on those for a while way back before the Mirena was found to stop periods. had that fitted and never looked back0

Thank you.
Its the 10 day thing I can't understand. I have to take them for 10 days in each cycle. What will happen at the end of the 10 days? Will it just delay the start of the 2-3 week period??

ACEY, sorry cant help you there.
I only ever used them when going on hols, if I remember rightly after I stopped taking them my period started again about 7 days later.
If you are heavy there are tablets you can take to make you lighter, i recently seen my doctor about having heavy periods and he was going to prescribe some, but he said we will wait till Ive had my scan results to see if theres a problem. hopefully my scan results will be here next week , im hoping theres nothing wrong0 -
Best of luck with your scan result, Eagle1.
Not heavy here, just persistant! Perhaps the 10 days worth is just to give me a break?!

10 days sounds about right, if you take them for 10 days and it takes about 7 days for a period to start then you're at around 17 days without a period. Then start a period, bleed for 7 days and start taking the tablets again. It will mean your cycle is a little short at about 24 days but it sounds like a huge improvement! You might find that you start taking them for 10 days a month but your gp might adjust the dosage at a later date if needs be.
I'd say give it a try and go back to your gp if things don't work out!0 -
I hate been female sometimes. I have recently been to the Doctors about heavy long cycles and had the usual blood tests all ok and have been given some tablets called Tranexamic Acid 2 to be taken upto 4 times a day on heavy days, they do help.
Also if you are bleeding for long periods of time maybe take some Ferrous Sulphate (iron tablets) I had a blood test that showed my iron levels was low but after taking these for a month my levels were back up.0
