MORTGAGE ARREARS - please help

I am 2 months behind with my mortgage payments which is a total of just under £1000. I have received a letter today saying that a Field Counsellor is to visit us to establish the reason for the arrears and agree a mutually satisfactory way forward, and that a charge of £79.90 will be made for this visit and it will be debited to our mortgage.
Does anyone know if I can make an offer of paying more each month to clear this and how much more payment will they expect.
I can make a payment of £530 tomorrow but then my mortgage is due again on the 15th which will make me about £900 in arrears then.
I'm really frightened as to what is going to happen.
My mortgage is with Abbey.
PLEASE HELP

Phone Abbey and let them know the situation. They will discuss options with you. The fact that you are in arrears will have dented your credit record, but there is nothing you can do about that at the moment.
Is there a reason why you have gotten behind?I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Have spoken to Recoveries department at Abbey and spoke to a really nice lady. I have offered £50.00 a month more on my mortgage each month and had to give details of income/outcome. This was all sorted within about 10 minutes and a new direct debit has been set up.:j

What you need to be aware of is that until you have paid off the full amount of arrears, it will probably show that you have missed mortgage payments on your credit record. Pull out all the stops and try and clear all of the arrears asap.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Your credit file will show "Arrangement" as being in place but the most important thing is you are paying it off.0
