Cancelling Direct Debits to Council tax and Water. Will I get charged by the bank?

I pay the council tax and water rates out of my bank account but we rent and the actual bills are in the landlords name.

I need to cancel them as we will have left this property by 23rd of this month (we only got notice last week of the date)

If I cancel them and the companies then try to take the money on 1st of the month, will I then get charged/fined by the company trying to claim the money or the bank?

The landlord is telling these people that the house will be unoccupied but I do not want to get fined if the letters do not get there and the details do not get sorted in time. The money has come out of my account for all of these years but it is not in my name to be able to tell them.

I hope all of this makes sense and I hope someone else can help, not sure if I am asking on the right board though.

Thanks. x

You shouldn't be charged by council tax, not sure about water as we pay ours as part of the council tax.

If you are worried I would ring them and advise them of your move and new address so they are aware and ensure you cancel your dd's in plenty of time.

Your best bet is to put it in writting using your details and explain what you have esaid in your post. If you include all the details including the ac!!!! number this shouldn't be a problem.

If you give them enough time they shouldn't try to take the money from your account.

If they do give your bank a quick ring and when I had a similar problem the bank waivered the charges as they weren't my fault.

OK thanks, I'll checked out the DD Guarentee and it says I can cancel anytime so I will do this (I can do it online) and the LL is going to call the companies and get the paperwork sorted from her end. Thanks again. Always handy to get a quick answer than googling for hours!! x
