Darn, missed half the programme ... How do I "downshift" if I'm already buying Mr T's cheapest brand? Should I "upshift" to see if there is any change in quality? :p

    Try Lidl or Aldi?

I think some things there is a very definite difference in tastes but you have to just check for yourself.

I've done some "downshifting" ftom Tesco's to Aldi's this month , trying their frozen chips and some other frozen food, and some of their ready meals at 99p are very nice , against the £2 ish in Mr T's

their dried pasta is very cheap as well , Dishwasher tablets very good,. theres a "Great What/What Not to Buy at Lidl, Aldi and Netto Hunt " thread somewhere, found it !!

Hi Aldi/Lidl is a very important option - sadly the main mention and discussion of them was cut out of the programme due to time :(

I have to admit to being a food snob, but a moneysaving one at that and I really like Aldi and Lidl for a lot of my ingredients.

I have a friend who is a chef and he will only use Aldi's pasta as its made with 100% durum wheat and no fillers, its also about 40p less than Sainsbury's good quality pasta.

I purchased a flaker which is a device for flaking oats and other grains. I now buy organic oat groats and flake them myself to make porridge, muesli, muesli bars etc and it costs me about 2p per serving... compare that with the price of organic muesli!

Good program and the indian food looked delicious!

Yes, but I'm a lazy b*gger - I like to get all my shopping from one place!

    Ok, Ok, I know ... money-saving and laziness don't mix ...

I do visit Aldi (not so found of Lidl) but I tend to buy "extras" there rather than main shopping. For instance, I've found they have a far better range of part-baked bread than Mr T.

  • my problem is im up shifting now. the reasons, going to tescos at 7.45pm for 90% OFF REDUCED and getting better quality stuff for 10p and also coupon bashing at my local asda and tesco. i get more items than i used to buy things i could never afford and now pay even less than i used to. i can do a weekly shop for a couple of quid if the stuff there.
:rotfl: given up on tesco do a lot os boots offers. but weekends are now in orange trackside b. lol

Living miles from any decent shops, I shop online. I always get the BOGOFs and free delivery. The free delivery means about an hour NOT in my car and a saving of a 30 mile round trip. That's gotta be a saving on diesel alone. I also find that when I shop instore I have a problem with impulse buying!
My nearest aldi/lidl is about 30 miles away. They did apply to move into my market town but were refused planning!! It wasn't 'in keeping' with the area:eek: it also stopped fast food chains by the way. I wouldn't mind but the local councils snobbery costs most family dearly.

We're getting a Lidl that will be about 10-15 minutes from us by bus and foot this year, so I'll check that out when it opens. Meanwhile, I'll use Morrisons and Mr T (almost everything I buy is special offer or basics brand), especially the former since I can use my bmi Amex card there to collect my destination miles.

Another tip: don't shop if you're hungry - eat first! (We used to have a huge impulse shopping bill until we both started eating lunch or dinner before shopping; not so easy when we worked on the weekends since both our shifts ended at lunchtime).
