Like Poppyolivia, I am in my 30s with train tracks and its not a problem, I don't think having braces slightly later than average as in your daughter case will do her any harm at all, £3400 is alot of money....

I think there is definintely something to be said about having it done too early. I had braces as a young teenager, and my teeth have moved so much since that I have actually qualified for NHS treatment again (as an adult the criteria is even more stringent, so you can imagine how bad it is!) In my case the waiting list is 3.5 years, so I do sympathise with your daughter not wanting to wait. I have decided to pay, and will be funding treatment myself, as I have not found any health insurance that would cover this. However I have been quoted £2000 - £2500 for fixed braces on the top and the bottom. Are you sure your daughter has been offered the most competitive quote?0

I hated the braces, wore them a couple of times then never wore them again. OK, so my teeth aren't perfectly in line. But I can speak without biting my tongue and eat without dribbling, so who cares? :rotfl:
I was told my son needed the full works when he was about ten. We didn't get it done in the end because we moved out of the area and I didn't get around to sorting it out. He's now 18 and has beautifully straight teeth.
I think sometimes unscrupulous dentists 'invent' work for themselves.0 -
I too had a brace when I was 11, which I had to wear for 2 years. My teeth moved so much so that I had a large overbite and again had braces at 29 for 2 years. 10 years on no problems. I was lucky and had them done on the NHS both times. I couldn't have afforded it, if I had had to go private. I would say wait till your child is older and their growing has slowed down.
I remember sitting in the waiting room waiting from my impressions and there were several women and men sitting there in exactly the same position, brace when they were very young, brace needed when they were older.
Its only when you start wearing them you see so many other people your age wearing them.:rotfl: l love this site!! :rotfl:0 -
MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to the Health board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I got my braces on a few weeks before my 18th birthday. I remember actually being scared, but excited too as my teeth were hideous (overcrowded, two abscesses in two teeth, needed 4 teeth taken out etc). I get them off on 4th July (I'm 21 now). I can't wait. My teeth might not be as straight as they could be but compared to what they were like before, it is a vast improvement, and those around me notice how different they are. It's defo worth it.
