Options if turned down for a mortgage

Hi everyone, just wondering about a possible scenario we might be facing.
Myself and my partner have applied for a joint mortgage, after speaking with a broker we were initially recommended Alliance and Leicester and went through an initial application but in the end it wasn't suitable so I then went through HSBC myself after seeing some advice somewhere else on the board and their rates were very good.
HSBC have come back this week and said that they won't be able to borrow us the amount, but this is still up in the air because I recently paid off a 10k loan and this is still showing. We should be accepted providing they know about this loan and that it's paid off, but if not I was looking into Nationwide, when I've done their website calculations they seem to be able to borrow us 20k over what we actually need wheras HSBC were a few grand under (4k).
Are there many problems that anyone has found in the past with a number of applications in a short space of time? We've got no other credit problems etc but just wondering about doing three applications in pretty much 3 weeks.
