Hello,
Apologies if this seems like a very obvious question, but I'm having problems working out just what's what. I'd like to buy a nail file online, the kind you use when cutting your fingernaile or toenails to smooth them off.
Could anyone point me to a good quality, strong but cheap one that's also preferrably got a good cutter built in?
Thanks for any help and sorry again for this.

wouldn't it be cheaper and quicker to pop to the local chemist, sounds like you need nail clippers.Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
For smoothing the rough bits of nails, I would never use anything but an emery board: nail files just aren't effective!
Sometimes nail clippers have a small file on them, but TBH it's not usually much good. Get 'em separate! Also if you want clippers for your nails, I think the ones shaped like pliers are stronger than the ones for fingernails.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
HI. Thanks for that advice. Any rec's on emery boards? Often they are not described well in the product description so for someone who has difficulty seeing the pictures it's quite a pain. I think some stores need to smoothen the edges of their sites when it comes to accessibility (a very bad pun I know)

I just buy from Boots, I get 'normal' emery boards, which do wear down after a while but a pack lasts ages. I know you can get rigid ones which are supposed to last forever, but I need to have an emery board in my purse in case I catch a nail, and a pack in my desk drawer etc, so lots of cheaper ones is better than a permanent one!Signature removed for peace of mind0

I really like a pack from Boots. It's a pack of two, and is harsher on one side than the other. Price about £1.99 I think, but lasts ages as you can wash them. Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker0

Years ago I bought a tweezerman travel set in a navy leather case, it had a set of nail clippers, cutical trimmers, mini tweezers and a metal nail file in and cost less than the price of a full size set of tweezerman tweezers! Although it's a metal file it's the best one I've ever used with a coarse side and a really fine side. I haven't seen them for sale for quite some time but I got mine from boots.0

Hi and thanks for the suggestions. Sorry for the delay in replying, being worked to death these days. Anyway, I'll check out boots. BTW, is calling it a nail file the right phrase or is it something else now (hey, in these days of political correctness and all that, you never know!). Just me having to ask that question shows my sheltered'ness from the world of beauty and manicure, I guess. Oh well, where's a guy's feminine side when he needs it? Probably why my success at dating has been rather non-existant lately.
Thanks again.Know me for who I am, not for who I say I am.0 -
Well, I'm no manicure expert, but I would call it a nail file if it is metal, with a hook shape at one end, usually one side has a coarser texture. They CAN be used to file your nails, but they make mine split again, so I prefer to use an emery board. In bloke terms, these are like a very thin lolly stick with coarse sandpaper on one side, and fine on the other. Thinner than a lolly stick though, and slightly flexible.
Come to think of it, you could probably get the same results from very very fine sandpaper, but don't do it in public if you want to attract the girls. Actually, don't even use an emery board in public, not visibly.
When you get to Boots or wherever, don't be bamboozled by the multi-tasking tools for buffing, smoothing and polishing your nails if all you want is a pack of emery boards.
Those little clippers with a teensy nail file which swivels round on the end are great for clipping rough bits on my cuticles, but pretty useless for actually cutting nails, although I guess some people get on with them OK. For fingernails, I use SHARP scissors, used for nothing else. If you have very tough nails then I'd think seriously about getting some plier shaped clippers, especially for toes.
finally, if you can spare the time, some of those 'nail bars' offer male manicures, and you'd get good tips on nail care there, I'm sure. If you don't want to come away with painted nails, I'm sure that's not compulsory.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi, thanks. I'm sure I'll be able to find something that matches that description. Absolutely agree about not doing it in public, gotta keep some dignity you know? And no, I think I'll pass on getting the nails painted. Maybe as a dare, but only if the price is rightKnow me for who I am, not for who I say I am.0

Those two products should last a good few months and keep your nails looking beautiful
Superdrug do the same sort of things - possibly cheaper0
