I've been job hunting on my dinner break and came across this: The place is the disability coalition, by the way.
Please note - It is a Genuine Occupational Requirement that this post is filled by a disabled person, and therefore only disabled people are eligible to apply.
Isn't that discriminating against non disabled people? If the ad said the opposite, you can't apply if you're disabled (for arguments sake), that would surely be discriminating.. So how can they say you can only apply if you are disabled? The job is an admin job, anyone could do it. I know it's dealing with disabled people, but still.

I suppose. I do find positive discrimination to be.... Odd. An odd combination.0 -
precisely! Is it any wonder we dont know whether we're coming or going?!
People will be afraid to speak soon for fear of being jailed for discrimination, racism or just political incorrectness.;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0 -
When I was doing my Health and Social Care A level, we learnt something about this. I can't remember exactly what it is called, but it's something to do with not being discriminatory but about the right type of person for the job or something. Sorry if that sounds vague. It's been a long time since I did Health and Social Care.

Had you read what it said properly, you would see that it is a required experience for the role, just as e.g. being able to type or speak French could be. If you do not have the relevant experience, then you are not suitable for the role.
Would you be playing the discrimination card if a role required you to be able to use CAD or Excel?
All too many people see the word disability and think that discrimination has to apply - disability does not have to be a negative.Gone ... or have I?0 -
following on from what dmg said, it is a requirement of the job so no, obviously it isn't discrimination.
Disabled people can't be offered certain jobs and so are excluded from applying..
fire fighters, police officers, roofers. I could go on lol...Keely0 -
The Disability Discrimination Act is only for discrimination against a disabled person and takes no account of positive discrimination in favour of a disable person so to answer the OPs question. Yes it is legal"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Being disabled is NOTHING like being able to speak French. Anyone can learn French. Anyone can learn how to use Excel, anyone can learn how to use CAD programs. Being disabled has NOTHING to do with experience. You have got to be off your rocker.0 -

This is like advertising a vacancy which is open only to, for example, a specifically male or female candidate. They should be able to quote the section of the Act which justifies the discrimination.
"Discrimination" should be a neutral word. It is unfair discrimination which is illegal.0 -
It's not illegal if they have included in their advert a disclaimer about their rights under discrimination act. Its like when a female carer is required and only female will do....these adverts show that they are using their rights some sect. under the discrimination act0
